Elves and forests

O.k Elves are supposed to love nature. Yet they are the best with bows. Now how does that work out lol. I think that mages and druids should have some sort of specail way of extracting wood out of a tree without harming the tree.

If you know anything about making bows, you don't use fresh wood. If you chop down the tree fresh, you have to dry out the wood. Trees die and dead wood is much dryer than fresh, so making bows out of fairly dead wood is an option. However trees do not just die in Illarion, if you are an elven carpenter you might roleplay this or something while chopping down trees for firewood or items.

Elves love the woods, orcs eat raw meat and are violent, the french cuisine is the best in the world...
Why can´t I stand all these stereotypes?
Are the elves something like "The Green Party" of fantasy? And is there really any sense in this proposal?

you FOOL!
Belgian cuisine is the best in the world!
The french is only the most expensive.

Because trees live in the forests, why would they mass chop down their home?

Well Grobul, I have seen many Elves run through the forest and chop it all down. Also, here in Illarion they dont live in the forest, they all seem to live in the city.

I honestly would be impressed if the Elven city actually got built....but with all the building going on currently all over the island, it is seemingly possible....but...I wont hold my breath

well, darlok got his castle built after playing this game for about 3 years and he had some really creative and original roleplay to support it. The Evergreen guild has been around for a year before they got their new island. And the new house south of the Sea Horse inn is owned by some older players.
So the chances of the new players building a city from scratch without any older more experienced roleplayers supporting is, to say the least, unlikely. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and hey, maybe I am wrong, but i doubt the GMs are going to make a whole city into this game for 10 or so new players. Maybe if your little guild or whatever you call it stays around for a year or two. But it won't be built anytime soon I garuntee.

This is off topic, and I don't know how long you have played the game grant, but there are players older than you think in the elven guild.

I mean character wise, not player.

I say if they are organized enough to dig up enough money then let them build...who cares if it gets abandoned..then the gms can throws like a zombie spawn in the town and call it the lost city or something...just more stuff to add to help encourage more rp

[sarcasm]Hey! Hobbits do really like pigs. Why can´t some mages invent a spell that makes it possible to get bacon out of a pig without hurting it? [/sarcasm]
This thread is senseles. Even wood elves live in a symbiosis with the forest that allows them to cut down some trees.

It is not sensless Think about it why would elves want to mass hunt forests. Sure there is some mutalism but when it comes down to the point elves don't like to kill off nature.

As said before, even elves cut *some* trees. After all, they can't just crap out a branch and call it an arrow, or a 5' foot longbow. Where did this junk turn up that elves aren't allowed to cut any trees?

Exactly, Bloodhearte. Elves are definitely allowed to cut trees. IMHO if we only would use stereotypes in RPing that would give us a dilemma: do elves cut trees to heat up they dwellings , or do they make friends with dwarves to buy their coal? Both stereotypes wrong ; elves and dwarves can be friends ( off topic, but anyway true ) and elves definitely can cut down trees. You just have to see a difference between massive forest ravage and cutting one tree for badly needed wood. Especially if you choose this tree carefully and use the wood wisely - the act of great creation sometimes can justify minor acts of destruction, that is just turning one existence into other one... not killing for the killing, just normal process, so beloved by mother nature.
And inventing the spell to cut trees without cutting trees is not supporting the balance of the nature, just the opposite I think.

As I said before, you use dead wood to light on fire, roleplay you go through the forest chopping down a few "dead" trees. Cutting down some trees is fine IMO, but the only problem is people who cut down a few end up cutting down every tree in site.

This is getting way off topic, but I couldn't resist replying
Elves do cut trees, but almost always only a few branches to make bows (the tree itself is to hard)
And they say elves don't cut trees, because when they cut down a tree, they mostly plant a new one (one tree dead, a new one living, what's the difference?)
And by the way, not all elves love the woods, I think Drows even hate them
And now about the topic, I think it's difficult to make something like that, and it doesn't make sence that elves can't cut trees
What does make sence is that druids should not do it, or what is used in RL, that the druid should ask permission at the tree (meditate?)

Please direct me to an official illarion site that talks about drows. In the races on moonsilver/homepage there is no drows. Gm's also extremely discourage the roleplay of these due to technical difficulty and people just can't play them right. This can lead to banning. Playing "unique" characters is also discouraged due to the current amount of them. My suggestion is to just play a human with some craft who just wants to make a living and some friends, then once you learn better rp and how/why things work the way they do then make a character that requires more rp, basically every other race besides humans.

Drow are going to be implemented, but most probably not as a player race.

Maybe a gm-ok required race, as in you can request that character, but you have to be pre-qualified or something to that effect?

No, more as in AI controlled monster.
