I dont think i could join the army and let someone with more stripes or whatever on their arm treat me like muck and make me do pointless things, but anyway, although i dont really know you much, good luck with your future and everything you choose to do.

Ehh, Sansonic, you don't have to do that so early, but if you wish to do so, I wish you luck.
I am thinking about going into army too, but that is my duty as a citizen of my country.
I have many years left until I have to do it, I am thinking about finishing my studies first, and then, who knows? Maybe my opinion changes about going that, and I'd rather go to the Civil service.
But I don't really have much choice, it's either one of those two, or go to the jail.

@Khanja: "let someone with more stripes or whatever on their arm treat me like muck and make me do pointless things"
Beeing an officer myself, I can't let this statment be uncommented.
It seems to me, that this opinion is more influenced by films like "Full metal jacket" than the reality.
I can only speak for the german armed forces, but here you get punished by court or your superiors, when you give "pointless" orders, therefore the people in "Full metal jacket" wouldn't be in command (and with a job) for a long time. The officers I learned to know from other countries, show a similar attitude towards this issue too, but I think, that germany may be one of the strictest countries on this topic (since the armed forces were "founded" after world war II, they don't have to carry a long tradition like other forces, so they are quite modern (talking about laws, not equipment)).
Of course if your opinion is, that the whole existence of an armed force is pointless, almost every command given will be pointless. If thats your opinion, I have also a different point of view, but I don't want to go off topic for too long.

Sorry Seth, but I have to disagree in a way. I know because both my father and brother are militaries and most times you only value what you started from the beginning and made some effort to accomplish. Without difficulties no achievement is as pleasant as it could have been.
I like the idea of joining the army and I would have done it myself if the academy would accept girls. And just in case you are wondering, yes, I could have finished college and tried as something else, but that´s just not what I wanted. I was not born to be treated as a superior and I like it the way it is. If you can do what you want and like to do without hurting others is ten times more worthy than doing just what society or money tells you to.

This topic is of current interest to me...
Me, Nihiel (the hippie who's playing Nihiel) is going to the civilian service like all the finnish hippies and other homeland's traitors ( I like being self ironic X-D ) who don't want to join the army and get a haircut do, after 10 days (28th october)... I have to be without the net for about 30 days and it might be quite difficult for a person with difficult internet addiction like me, unless I quickly find someone who can borrow me a GPRS phone.

...
BTW (as anyone would care, I guess no one remembers the elven druid Nihiel), I haven't been actively in Illarion for a while, as when the server went down I started IRCing more than RPG'ing but I have a feeling that I'll be back soon...
@Sansonic: You're spending quite long time there, so get a portable computer and a GPRS phone and take them with you there... some people in my country who are in the military service do so, as it's the cheapest possible internet connection and it's wireless so you can connect to the net anywhere.

I would join the army after I finish studying except for the fact that it is extremely underfunded here in Canada and with Bush talking about war Canada would be drawn into all those things and it could last years...
I will be sorry to see you go but I will enjoy the time while you are here

I've decided that i am actually to intelligent to run into a field with a rifle and be shot. So i am going to be a Royal Air Force Pilot Officer. When i am 18 years old and 6 months i'll go to Cranwell to get my stripes and then off to the airbase to get my wings. I hope to be fast-jet and push speeds off 2,350 MPH, wish me luck

well, when your flying over IRaq with AA fire and your wingman goes down, godspeed.

@Sansonic: I would suggest having a backup plan.
In germany, many people want to get pilots, but only a few were selected. On the training there will be another selection, so that only very few will be sitting in a jet sometime (talking about a jet in the air, I sit in a jet on the ground almost every day...)

when I was there, I had not see much of planes at all, what DO YOU geramns fly? imported harriers and f-22's? or f-16s and good ole f-14s? russian planes? some secret service aircraft made by germans called the Stuorgemtung?

Tornados, a few Mig 29 and Phantoms.

I am currently trained as an aeroplane electronic maintenance officer. This won't be my real assignment, since I will be transfered to develop helicopter software soon.
The german air force has (as pointed out by Adano Eles):
- F4F Phantom (rather old, will be replaced soon by the eurofighter)
- PA200 Tornado (also old, but will stay for some time)
- Mig 29 (will also be replaced by the eurofighter. We got the jets from the german democratic republik after the cold war)
Transall (should be replaced by A300 soon)
- A few other planes, that are almost only used for the transport of politicians.
- training planes (Piper? not sure about it)
Most of the planes aren't in their original configuration anymore of course (better radar, electronic warfare ...).

ya, you guys outa upgrade, thier past thier prime, Probably your best bet (until the euro fighter) is to upgrade the Mig-29s and the F4's, but ditch the Tornadoes....not much use.

We can't ditch the tornados, since they are built for completely different missions than the F4F/Mig 29, so they can't replace it.
Also the tornados are more up to date than the other jets we have.

hmmm, if your tornadoes are less up to date/resilient the Mg-2s, ditch the migs and import a few F-14 tomcats:)
really, if your migs are overhualed to an extent to keep them to date with todays technology....from what I've heard and/or seen, they should out do the tornadoes in tactical and air/ground combat.
