Weather system - what happened?

I've been thinking about making this post for a long time... just always forgot whenever i was in the forum...
anyway, After the last server crash, I noticed (for a day ort so) that the server would randomly send out weather reports, such as "the sky gets cloudy, and rain start falling" and such...
I found that to be really nifty, and very much RP inducing, so that poeple actually gathered around fires when it was cold, and went inside when it rained...
I really loved that...
but it seems it only lasted that one day..

any plans of reincorporating it?

Weather effects are done by a GM who is online. As you might have noticed, there hasn't been GM's on or doing this effect for a while.

Maybe they should find a full time weather person.

Someone who's staying online and has to do weather every 10 minutes like 'The sun is still shining' and so on and so on.. This will be done when the GM's got time, you can also imagine your own weather.

ah yes, but I think it would be disturbing if we had 30 different weather systems happening at the same time... ie, snow in the shop, sunny outside and a horrible storm by the zombies...

couldn't you just program it that it randomly goes through a cycle of weather...? so that way nobody has to be online and the server will just automatically send out pre-written messages.

1) that's a topic for the proposal board.
2)
Baldur (the server programmer) hast left the development team. He took the consequences of a loosing interest in the game during the past year or more. This is also the reason, why almost no deadline of the project was met during this time period. The problem that is caused by this situation is, that Baldur is the only one, who knows how the server is programmed. He agreed, that we may use the sourcecode to continue with the server, but this means, that new programmers have to work through about 30.000 lines of sourcecode with almost no global documentation. If we will be able to find someone to continue this work, there will still be a lot of time passing by, till he will be able to come up with a server update. Right now, we try to rebuild the team and redistribute the work. There will be a posting, how to help on the mainboard.
Request for help.
needed:
A) Server programmer:
--------------------------
- should of course be able to program
- should have experiences with bigger projects (not 2 page programms) [...]
usually one should be able to find the news (hint:
www.illarion.de) and the other postings on his own. maybe you think about it a little bit, conclude something and post what you think here.

is it possible to create in the upper right a small field, showing weather effects?

i'll translate the (ununderstandable) news and brors posting into proper language:
currently there's no f****** one who
* can read the server
* can understand the server
* can program the server.
the server consists of app. 30000 lines of undocumented C++-code.
if there's someone who manages to deciffer 100 lines of code per day (in average), this would mean that about 300 days (remember: one year has 365 day in a usual year on planet earth) will be needed to *read and understand* the server. some other weeks will follow in which the server is cleared and improved.
*in principle* everything is possible if you do not take into account the factor called "time" (aka the forth dimension). in particular, every change in the server, be it as small as possible, will take several month up to a year.
maybe this is understandable now.
to give a readers digest version: there's currently no one who can program these proposed changes.
tell me if anything stayed unclear.

Martin Martin Martin, I think we get the fact your angry.....And I'm happy you got it off your chest, I'm angry to Baldur left and I'm betting it wasent a great departure, now illa's behind shedule, and for the past year you've done your part with the GFX only to find out that the server programmer abandoned you now your very very angry, Have you tried meditation works wonders....

what about a gm that is played by the server, telling about the weather every 30 minutes for the next 24 hours? and what about that we get told more about the wether at the server list? one of both should be possible.

Now, I'm not a server programmer or any of that so I'm gonna ask a dumb question to get an answer so that then I will know: Why not get a programmer or two who can make a new server with a new code, seeing as your probably won't find anyone who can read the current one.

1) it would take much longer.
2) it's, in principle, the same problem.
3) it's not that no one can read the server in principle, it's just that no one did it and you can't read it like a book.
i'd suggest to discuss this somewhere else, i'd prefer private mail or private messaging.
(however, the server can't play a GM without being modified...)

Back to ideas for the future (Move this to the proposal board if you want). A cycle of weather conditions might get sort of boring, so a random thing would need to be added. The only problem with randomizing it, is it could possibly go from snowing heavily to being hot and sunny to a torrential downpour. Also, I don't think that there should be a message over your head every ten minutes, but maybe if you press F10 or something, it says "#me looks up to the sky. It is cloudy. It feels cold." And that would be the thing that changes every once and a while.

Mannelig, I can't believe you made a full working replica of Illarion, that's pretty impressive...
But isn't it also kind of...illegal?
Anyway, about the weather system...
Why not add a weather person, (it could be called a Shaman) to the shop where we just have to shift click that person to hear what the weather will be...
Then later on that day we could behave as if that weather is happening...
A new type of weather could be introduced for each day.

Mannelig has all kinds of interesting stuff, no one gets to see. I am thinking about the ultimate solution to the PK-problem, that was too secret to post it here, so it could only be sent by email (which hasn't made it up here for perhaps four weeks).
