I was wondering..

When and if you DO finish the map editor, will you be adding onto the current island, or making new ones.. I can see how you could make new ones and put it in RP, but how exactly would you add on to the current island and.. well.. put some roleplay to it. For instance, i spent a few mins and thought of some possible ways, all of which would be, if used, EXTREMEMLY annoying, and sorta explaining why..
If you said "the gods did it."
Then, why wouldnt they of done it before if they had such power?
**This would proably have a good bit of players rapidly banging there head agenst there computers.. Its one of those things thats just soo.. 'UGH!!' you cant describe it.. If you have sibblings, really annoying 'friends', or a boss who uses the same excuse over and over and it sorta gives you the urge to grab him by the neck and strangle him.. then you should know what I mean. Woa, got in a rant there, sorry.**
If you said "[good persons name here] used great magic to create more."
Why would they?
**This wouldnt be TOO bad if you have a
GOOD reason, but someone would have to spend days on end comeing up with a good enough reason without it causing the same effect as above.**
If you said "[evil persons name] used his mighty magic to create it."
They are evil, no sence in it. Wouldnt they want to make people suffer by "flooding" illarion, suffocating it in a sence, making it smaller. Sorta like the drought effect.. Bravo on that by the way. You didnt smack the entire village with sand the first day, you let it layer on slowly.
If you said "The drought dried up some of the ocean revealing more land."
This is the most proable thing that would come to my mind, but you would have to controll the urge to not go trigger happy with the map maker program and make more and more land slowly. I once worked on game, and they foolishly let me get my hands on the map-editor, so I know the feeling from expierence, and the game had the map editor for a long time, I couldnt imagine how much Bror (or whoever would make the map) would drool when he got his hands on one. so.. erm.. do try to fight it.. IT WILL CONTROLL YOU!
Well.. thats about it.. please.. please.. dont reply to this pointont out my typographical/grammar errors, or misuse of words. Im from the southern region of the USA, I ain't no politically correct, pretty pretty fufu grammar person. However, my semi-correct punctuation might fool some people..

The gods did it because they felt like it. Maybe they didnt want to do it before, or felt the population toe land mass ratio was small enoughfor the island. Who knows they're gods.

or...
a solid merchant route was established, that now also allows the people to travel from one island or continent to the other...

Morgane, thats a good one, but if you re-read my message i asked how could they if they got click happy and heavily modified trollsbane size-wise.. and Hone.. that would possibly be one of the most annoying things ever encoutered on illarion if they did that.. well.. i take that back.. the no ore, no wood thing is pretty annoying aswell.. Im surpised illarion even has new people, the game sucks now. I hope they put the resources BACK in the game.

Well we could always have a quest to build a boat that takes people to and from the island, you really should put your complaints on the complaint part of this forum.

how about this:
New islands were chartered in the sea

Maybe sailing isn't known in this world, but the Magic Academy discovers an old and forgot way of magic with which persons can be teleportated to other shores.

That would make the sailing based quests pointless

Yeh, so? If the sailing is unknown in the world, then they are pointless.

The shores of our island are not suitable for a large harbor installment, so only few ships ever dock here and other ways to travel must be found?

There are several sailing mentions on the boards and I believe in the chronicle, to say its pointless would be to say actual historical events are pointless, wich makes the work of those quests pointless.
Magical teleportation is so overused, and doesent it seem sort of sci-fi to you?

Baloons aren't invented yet, are they? Maybe some primitive, exceptional type of flying device? Something that can simply work on wood and fire? Maybe a prototype baloon, with an oven on it, constantly heated by coal?
Not that its invention is impossible or contradicting the atmosphere of the time...

If we have a look into the human history, we can clearly see, that even though sailing was someday invented, the boats were in no way capable to set out into the wide open see.
In addition superstition and religious believe prevented them from leaving the sight of the shore. It took them hundreds and hundreds of years just to leave the shore and set out to find new places. And in the beginning those who dared, did not return. Their boats were smashed in a raging storm and don't you remember the good old see-mosters, just waiting beneath the surface to extend their oozing arms out to the unaware see-traveller and suck them down to their wet and cold oblivion?
Why should it sound strange (if the map will be extended) that a bold captain dares to face all these dangers and succeeds, where others failed? But this is just one possible explanation.

Illarion is beyond sea faring time, I thought......
I figured at least they'd have galley rowers and greek style harbor destroyers by now in the world
((Remember, the island isent the only lands mentioned in Moonsilver, OR the chronicle, so just because inhabitants of the island can't, doesent mean someone the GM's or Admins make up from the mainland can't))

It would be very easy for them to roleplay new islands, but i was asking
how they could add on to the orignal island of Illarion and put it in good RP.

Um well actuallt about the harbor. the dug out inlet and the new building look alot like a major dock area. where ships would be built and such. you know up by the shrine.

Then what about all the people who rped come to the isle form another BY BOAT.
p.s. also If i'm not mistaken, i hear a lot of people now a days calling the island Illarion, I though the entire realm was illarion, our isle was just a small bit of illarion.
sorry I knowthat had nothing to do with the topice but this has been eating away at me for a few weeks now.

Has the backgroundstoryteam the duty to take care of all the stuff (not to say if it was good or not), people wrote in the rpg-board the last three years?
I doubt, that they will be able to make a good and logic background involving all ideas rped by people since yet. The problem with this is, that people explore and define lands, towns, methods of traveling .... which aren't in the background yet. By doing so, noone can expect, that this will be involved in the official background. Maybe ships will come, maybe not.

@Kincent
The solution is simple, Shipbuilding is known in the 'world' but there is no-one who would posess the knowledge of constructing ships that would be capable of serious sailing on our precious little island.

@ Aragon & Caranthir Alright both have very good points.
Caranthir wrote:The solution is simple, Shipbuilding is known in the 'world' but there is no-one who would posess the knowledge of constructing ships that would be capable of serious sailing on our precious little island
Making a ship that could take serious sailing would need many people and a lot of supples as well.

Of course, it would take them a life time to add all the towns, citys, and Kingdoms people have used as their back ground story. It would be cool though.Anyways good point you and Caranthir win this one
I dont know

Thinkmy friends, did the vikings sail the open sea? YES.
Did the greeks sail the open Sea YES.
Did elves exist in that time NO!
so this is more like a fantasy medieval time not just Medieval Type game, therewere no halflings, orcs or any of the other but still vikings and Greeks could build good boats, that they had for trading and other purposes. And that is way more back then the "Dark ages"
so yes boats can be made, but who has the skill?
so I agree with a few and dissagree with a few but still if humans dont have the knowledge why not orcs, elves or even dwarfs?
well thats all I have to say.
Godspeed.

If there are no ships or anything, why do we have two docks?

Fishingboats? Or perhaps it's just a place to fish. Who said it was a dock anyways?

Orcs were land nomads, elves stayed in their forests, halflings farmed in the same place for like ever, and dwarves stayed in the mountains.

And humans?

That's what they should do when the get the new map. Have boats which sail between the island to the mainland, nothing really special or exiting though, just simple boats.

you also forget, we are on an island, small island
about the size of hawaii, maybe a bit larger/smaller
not all races would have had adams and eves placed on this island
so where did WE come from?

The mainland of course!
