The return of Dyluck - :)
Posted: Thu Aug 08, 2002 10:16 am
Hello everyone,
At long last I’ll soon be ready to return to the world of Illarion as the character Dyluck once again. But first I’ve brought with me a rather lengthy speech so you just might want to grab some coffee or something first, and as usual I do demand that you read my wording very carefully in order that you accurately understand what I'm trying to express
I’m sure many of you will be glad to have me back again as I will be glad to see many of you again as well. At the same time, a few of you might feel that I had abandoned you and I don’t blame you. In the end it was my own decision to leave and I was fully aware of the effects my departure would have. Of course as some of you know, the reason for my leaving was Bror’s decision to change the spell casting/intelligence system. Half of the community lost their ability to use magic and their roles and professions rendered senseless. Every wave of newbies brought in more and more wreckless havoc reeking non-roleplayers with their powerful spells while many veteran mage rolepalyers stood idly by unable to do anything against them with their now mediocre powers. Playing your role and walking safely around town was harder than ever during this time, all in the name of an attempt to get rid of “every mage in the land casting icebolts”.
Today, what is the resultant end? We look around us and we STILL have “every mage in the land casting icebolts”. (not literally but their attack arsenal would still consist of only the few strongest spells.) Did they really think that most of the mages would care about spell casting once they figured that the best spell they could ever cast was a second-rate spell? That they would continue to be a mage so that they can be the greatest spellcaster of the mediocre ra-kel? Or expect anyone to use their second rate (and practically useless) spells against any kind of superior foe? In the end, we still have the same situation of “everyone casting the same spells” and this attempt to make Illarion better has accomplished abosolutely nothing for everything that we lost.
As you can tell I’m still a bit angry about all this and I wanted to share my feelings with you all, but I also understand that the damage has already been done and that all we can do is start over with what’s left. I also understood that at the time of my departure that it couldn’t reverse the damage either but I wanted to show that in the attempt to create the perfect roleplaying game, he overlooked one very important variable: How the characters have progressed and developed together as a community. Together they made up what was the “background” of Illarion giving rise to numerous roleplaying events, which could bring together many people in the development of a quest or event or the politics of the town, where people actually cared about each other and were interested in continuing interacting with each other to create more roleplaying events. I tried very hard, but to no avail, to show him that the cons completely outweighed the pros of the effects that the decision of the change would bring, all just for a temporary solution (which has eventually accomplished nothing) to a minor problem. To this day, I still doubt he understands what had been lost and my opinion still is that it was a foolish and unnecessary change where the losses were greater than the gains.
But as I traveled through Illarion in my occasional visits I often still find gems in the sand, talented roleplayers who’s talents were not being used at their full potential, unrecognized for the true beauty of their abilities of who this game was meant for. It is these people that have inspired my return in hopes that I may make their talents known to all of Illarion so that they may share in and exchange more quality roleplaying experiences and events. I hope that you will all join with me, friends old and anew, in working together to restore Illarion to what it was when it’s community was at the height of it’s thriving progress and continue to build an even better roleplaying community for Illarion and hope that it will bring us even more quality roleplayers and friends who can share their experiences and interact and roleplay in a fitting atmosphere that was meant to be and which we can create.
Below is a set of links to some old stories and events in the rpg board involving myself, so that those who don’t know me very well can learn a little more about my history in Illarion (and a few of a little bit of amusing things). A few other stories of interest that didn’t involve me are included as well, some of which may explain a few rumors to how some things or places in Illarion came to exist. I think it’s worth your time to read some of these stories. I hope that these stories can inspire you or give you some new ideas.
In the "Mystery of Dyluck" thread, the first post and last post spans for almost 8 months but I've tried to place it in the most suitable place below. That thread contains some of the most stories in one place almost completely untouched by any unncecessary ooc so I'd appreciate it if you would keep it that way by not posting unnecessary comments like "wow interesting" or other ooc things.
I’ve tried best to list these in the most logical chronological order:
Story of the maid that turned to stone
The coffin in the ancient ruins
Mad mage around!
The sealed letter
The Escape
Mystery of Dyluck
Rainbow Cauldron
Udan Memorial
Fish of Forgetfulness
Concert Time
Aragon…Drakhen wants you dead
Curses in Town
The Tree of Life and Magic
Illarian Illympics
Making the Magic Sword
Phantoms
Search for the legendary Mana Well
This here is the link to the Magic Academy. Although this website is relatively new compared to the original website that preceded it, I’m planning to make another new one soon once I find the necessary help. The current website also contains the history of Illarion with the addition of music, which I think may make it slightly more enjoyable and worthwhile to read. Also the diary entries from the Magic Academy from long ago in the “Mystery of Dyluck” thread can also be found here accompanied by music. Enjoy.

Also please put up the banner for the Magic Academy once again in the Links section if anyone is available and if you still have the banner
