Watches

I think that watches would be a good and realistic way for people to know what time it is so that they don't have to reply on OOC means.
I have found a website (don't know how reliable) that says watches existed before 1600.

Anyway, I doesn't seem that unreasonable to have something like a gnome make a watch, but then we're getting closer to fantasy and farther away from realism. The game seems to be aimed more at realism than fantasy at the moment. Of course, who cares what I think.

I think a sundial, would be better than watches, that would make more sence than watches.

Watches were not introduced until the scientific effords of the Rennaisance brought great advanced in fine mechanical devices. In the middle ages, and Illarion is, at least in my eyes, set in a time frame similar to the early to high middle ages, the was almost no scientific progress and hence it would be nonsense to introduce something like watches.

There were watches in the 1500s, but, there was only an hour hand and they were not very accurate.

There were also steam engines in the year 80 b.c. but how long did it last until they were used regulary?
Do we really need watches ingame? Should our chars rush through the time like we do? I think watches won´t fit to Illarion. Let´s meet on high noon

Then there shouldn't be a clock in the client. I was just suggesting this to take the place of the clock.

Hey, it´s pretty usefull for the player to have a clock on the screen. How else should I know at night how late it is without getting up, turning on the light and getting shocked by it?
But let me argue your own way: Why are there bars for health and mana if the char can´t see them?
A big clock for the entire town might be nice... but watches for everyone? Who invents them ingame? Or do they just appear?
Just a few thoughts...

The clock was also an immense aid to navigation, and the precise measurement of time was essential for the growth of modern science.
I think a town clock would be a good idea.

Right now illarion is aimed at realism AS CONCIDES with fantasy...and I think this is a good thing. Realism as based on RL is no fun but realism based on medieval fantasy makes for good RP. In all realism based on medieval fantasy I think watches as in wristband kinds etc. would not be too beneficial. Perhaps an item like an hourglass to track time would be more appropriate. Or a skill for mages to determine the date.

I like the hourglass idea, less complicated than a clock, perhaps we could make this a quest of some sort, like we have to collect so much sand,pot ash, and wood for the hourglass to be made?

Making a small quest for the hourglass is an interesting idea. However, I would like it if a waterclock/sundial were just placed in the middle of the town. It would be much faster, not that I'm lazy. I would not mind working for a waterclock/sundial/hourglass. I just think a waterclock/sundial would be better to read.

I do not think the hour glass is very relevant as they can not be used to tell time accurately at any given moment. they can only tell time if one knows how long it takes for it to drain and if one consistantly turns it over at the second it runs out.
Refering to a few posts previous, the clock already in the game at the top right has nothing to do with this discussion as the proposal is for an ingame time and clock, whereas the built in client clock is purely OOC as it just allows you to see your computer clock without minimizing the screen. (Thank you, by the way for this simple yes useful addition.)
I like the idea of introducing in game time though as it can add RP elements such as "We'll hunt for 15 minutes then meet you back in town", or something. Albeit that woudn't work very well if there was but one clocktower in the center of town. But I do like the idea of having a clocktower more then being able to carry around watches.

I would rather see it as "We'll hunt until noon, then meet you back in town", the clock shouldn't be too accurate, perhaps something like "It's half past noon" or something similiar.

I agree with that. That would be a very good idea. Then you could just simply say to someone, "Meet me here at the shop at noon." I'm not too sure about the Early Evening, Evening, and Late Evening. Maybe there could be fewer messages. Still, it is a good idea. I think that it would be helpful if there were more than one hourglass/sundial. One should be in the middle of town, another at the eastern forest, etc.
That way you would not have to run all the way back in the middle of town just to see what time it is. This may not be a good idea, but it is something to think about.

If there is no light it is night, there will be no shadow cast from the sun over the sundial. And do you know what it means where there is no sun? ITS FRIGGIN NIGHT YOU THICK-HEADED RETARD!

*Maktan rolls in laughter at paul comments* Paul what is everyone trying to say is that a *speaks like talking to a child* sundial uses shadow to prdict the time. if it is night there is no shadow then there is night, that is time, also if you look outside you will see that it is night, simple?

And, since in Illarion there is no graphical diffrence between day and night (at least not at the moment), it would be only logical if it would say 'It is night'.

It wouldn't be logical for a sundial to say its night! It should either be:
A) Completetly black, and thats how you know, or
B)Dammit, I forgot what B was, but A is good enough!

The sundial wouldn't need to literally tell you ANYTHING ok? The message you get would just represent your character making an inference about the time of day by looking at the sundial. It doesn't necessarily mean there's a spot on the sundial marked as "Night", alright?

Paul! it doesn't say it noon either, you "figure" where the shadow points and "calculate" what time is it. but of course thinking is impossible for the spam artist paul.
