An open letter to AOL users

I knew better, but I did it anyway.

Rarely to I ever "bitch", but I needed to let off some steam.

Finding a good ISP these days seems to be harder and harder to do.
In the early days of the internet (I'm not referring to the old ARCNET...boy does that age me?), busy signals were the biggest problem, next to finding much real content.

Now, you have to contend with overtaxed DNS, dead sockets, viruses, worms, malicious java and DirectXcoding, and mostly kiddie scripter WANNA BE hackers.

So after dealing with all that, trying to keep your systems safe, should you have to put up with an ISP that boots active users? I am a professional geek, but I do not see a need to pay the outrageous prices for the high speed internet in my area. So I, as still better than 60% of Americans (more worldwide), use dialup. I have used a few different ones.
some major, some local, and all seem to have their quirks.

Since I have switched to AOL, I have been booted several times. When I was playing Ultima, this only mattered, because I knew I would quite possibly be dead when I got back. Runescape, didn't matter. But I am really angry now that I am playing Illarion. i actually get to do some actually RPing and what happens? I get booted. I try to train, I get booted. This doesn't just apply to the game, Surf the web, booted.

Since I subscribed to AOL, (about a week & 1/2 ago) my virus software has gone off (alrm bells, not shut off) three times. Very, very unusual.

I am already looking for another ISP.

P.S. I wouldn't have to worry about it if Illarion worked on my Linux box. Hmm...anybody think about writing a client? Think maybe developers share some code? :o

Oops. Don't forget the joke they call a browser. Mozilla Rules!

There must be something wrong with your AOL program or something. I too get booted off, but it doesn't happen all the time. Infact, it never really happends unless I have a total of 11 programs open at the same time, while I play Illarion. I am a little curious of AOL makes you slow. I mean, I am the slowest person I know of. I lag almost everytime I take a step, is this because of AOL? I have a fast computer. It isn't like anything shows up instantly on web pages, but you know. Another than thinking AOL makes me slow, I don't see any problems with using AOL with Illarion. What exactly happends when you get booted?

Tiscali, awsome for dial up and borad band.

On dial up which I am, Tiscali anytime, (which contrary to other providers) is actualy anytime day or nite there is NO I repeat NO (as almost all providers do) monthly hourly limit. The only down side is (as again with almost all dial up providers) you get disconected ever 2 hours, but can dial up again right away.

Dial up is the fastes I have had yet (out of the good few providers I have tryed) I have never once in 6 months of being with them had a server down time or server side techinal problem or billing mess ups.

Need techinal help..I couldnt get through on the techincal line so I called up sales..and the guys at the sales didnt mess me about or put me on hold but actual helped me! sorted the problem.

All my adds off programs, virus checkers, fire walls etc work with out problem.

So yeh..I love em, Im loyal to em. They are professsionals in a world of amatures. *cought* BT internet ... AOL *cough*

AOL seems to be a prime target for hackers and wannabe hackers alike. Because it's so crappy and (apparently) easy to attack!

AOl Sucks      That person has the right to hack it if they want, bring AOL down,(A joke, but aol is pretty bad, and they buy up small companies to much, Monoply anyone.) anyways AOL claims to be faster but that is just because they decrease (A good amont) the quailty of pictures you see(Can be turned off), Oh and Mozilla rules, a little buggy, but a lot better than IE and, netscape used their code and toned it down for their browser. Get mozilla www.mozilla.org.

I have tried Mozilla, and its alright for the most part. But what he would do is go into the AOL messenger code and change it to like, American Stalkers Online, or something.

Mozilla isn't a connection though, its just like i-net explorer but with more fiddly bits I cant be bothered with.

DRATHE! I have Tiscali too, but I have the 'unlimited off peak' connection. It's good connection and everything, but Tiscali disconnects every 2 or 3 hours, which does not make their service their proclaimed 'unlimited' How is it 'unlimited' if it limits be to 2 or 3 hours before I have to re-dial? These guys make me so mad I could rip a wet tissue paper right in half!

In the past AOl was reliable but they seem to be slacking now, not sure if they still are, try Netzero. Its what i use, and its cheap too.

www.netzero.com

oh and do not sign up for the high-speed part its only if you want faster page loads not downloads :D
but other then that they are quite reliabe. The internet wil not shut down completly if it is inactive, it is what AOl does I think, but Netzero will have a 50 second warning when the internet is inactive, which is true when you are playing most of the online games so. good luck. And Netzero is only good if you live in the US or Canada.

Thankyou for telling me that. Thats the best news I've had all week. Especially considering my Linux box is soo much faster than my Windblows box. :o :D :)
