Well seems like some people think Halflings and Hobbits are SOO much differently and think that in Illarion the miniture humans are halflings. Erm well I say it's hobbits AND Halflings. If you would be so kind to goto the Name Rules section of the website and scroll down to the bottem and read the example names. It clearly states Hobbits really big. Halflings, Hobbits. What's the difference. I was just starting to get fustrated about this. I got confused.

Well, in D&D its halflings, however tolkien says both, he talks of the hobbits living in the shire and then he also talks of the halfling race.
I think this is where the confusion may come from.

the correct term is halflings as it says when you create the character. Also the website calls it the "halfling race"

Yep! When I look at the language that i speak i can see some letters "Halfling language" in dark red (yep, dark... thank you, all you so evil snipers).
But hey, i call orcs "Greenlings", elfs "tall ones" and humans "big ones". Mayby elfs should be called "1 1/4-lings" and humans "doublehalflings"
Who cares about names? I think both is right, at least i listen to both, halfling and hobbit.

Some Halflings dont like it when you call them hobbits ingame.

Which is exactly why I call them Halflings. It is how I first learned about them, before I read LOTR, and that is how I refer to them.

When talking directly to a hobbit I call it halfling but, yet when talking about one I say hobbit. Just a habbit. I know some people have characters that like to be called halfling. Also that website you put up there....ummm go into name rules and at the bottem it calls them hobbits. That was the whole point of this thread. Which is it? Halfling or hobbit? I think it's both... Oh well.

I HEARD that halfing is considered a derogatory name by some, as it is insulting the height of a hobbit, but I think that hobbit is just the name of the shirefolk, as when Gandalf talked about Smeigol (or golem), he said that he was part of the riverfolk and was related to hobbits. Not conclusive, but still more evidence.

Rynt, that is what most Americans have taken from the Tolkien World ( HDR ), but it´s not a native word in Illarion, because we don´t play here the film.
But with the time, and the influence of Tolkien people thought its normal/legitim to call Halfings Hobbits.
P.S.: For you as player are Hobbits = Halflings, but the history from Illarion don´t know a word like Hobbit.

Golem is a ancester of the hobbits. Kind of like monkeys and humans.

Firstly, you are saying golem, which is a form of giant Stone/Metal creature of titanic strength. His name is Gollum.
Secondly......Nobody really knows who Gollum is. He could be a hobbit corrupted by the ring.He could be, as you said, some sort of ancestor to the river-folk.
Nobody can really say who or what he is. There are only theories.

Actually, you're wrong. Golem is from the Caballah (spelled something like that), which was basically the Jewish myths or witchcraft or something of the sort. Golems were made of clay and had the name of God imprinted in their foreheads and were animate. They protected shtetls from the non-Jews trying to kill the Jews. Very interesting stuff.

yes, that would be the a jewish view on golems. You must understand that there are other views aswell.
Just because the ancient greeks believed that man was indirectly created through the sky and the earth having sex doesn't necesarily mean that that is the only view.

That is NOT the Jewish view on Golem. That IS the golem. There is no other golem, except for what people created afterwards, based on the Caballah. If you think about Gollum and research the Golem, you will find similarities. Tolkien was a genius, to say the least.

First off Ryant I can tell you have NEVER read the books. For one reason is because it stats GOLLUM'S past in the beginning of one of the books.
And yes I did spell it wrong. It is spelled Gollum.

Well, in truth A golem can be made out of stone, clay or metal really. All are incredibly strong.
But the traditional one is the clay golem.

This is what the Encyclopedia Mythica has to say about golems.

by Rynt
Exactly. A sort of Non-Living, inanimate object given a sort of life as an automaton.......A golem.
In one game I played, you could make golems, but they were way too strong. a young mage could make the strongests kind of golem, which almost NO people in the game can defeat.
Unbalanced

I would like to note that I like the name known as halflings rather than hobbits. If you ever do happen to see me around, I would like to be called a halfling. To me, hobbit doesn't sound as good as halfling. I just thought I should mention that...Thank you.

Your char life in a hobbit hole ( gave the location this name ) but he would like to be called halfling not Hobbit?
That must be the well known women logic *scratches his head*.
p.s.: Can somebody of you guys explain me why you always write a signature like this
"Lotho Green
Tailor, Farmer, & Baker of Trollsbane" under your posts at a OOC board?
If can you show me a town called Trollsbane in our world and that you are a baker, tailor and farmer together i will visit you and buy all your stuff.
p.s.2: I suggest your char become a smith, carpenter and goldsmith, too.

Oh. Well, if you are speaking of a halfling's home, then I like: Hobbit Hole, rather than: Halfling Hole. I'm saying if you say something such as: "Stop hobbit!" I would like to hear: "Stop halfling." When you mention my characters home, hobbit hole sounds better than halfling hole. Anyway, I took off my location.

Yes, maybe in the future Fieps. For now, I only wish to be a simple farmer. Thank you for your suggestion though...
