Status effecting smithing goods?

With my second character, Kyred, I have never faild at Smithing gold nuggets into gold items. Not that i'm complaining but does your character's status have an effect on your crafts, because my first character usually failed at smithing gold but his stats is much different from my second's (my second character doesn't even have Gold Smithing as a craftskill yet).
