That's a nice way of saying, "I need help, but I'd rather die than recieve it from any of you"

Perhaps she doesn't need any help.

I think she can handle it just fine.

There will be no help from "outside".
Cant you imagine why? These Mails contain Character Infromations like Names and Passwords.

the people would get hacked.... not that big of a deal... these are new characters with nothing. BEsides, of course they wouldn't want constant trouble makers to take care of anything.

Not a big deal?
Imagine the following:
I could convince Galdriel to help her with these annoying account Mails.
You create a new Character.
By Chance your request lands in my InBox, now i now you Characternames of your Mainchar, your new Char and both passwords.
Now you do something that makes me belive that you need a little "lesson" to learn.
Remember, i know you Passwords.
I can access you Character anytime i want, and do everything i desire to.
I could simply steal you Belongings (pass them to my Chars/give them away).
I could cause havoc with your Char, so it get deleted.
.... i have limitless things i could do to make you apear a bad-boy.
(If you werent a badboy already)
Thats the reason behind it.

but then it would only take the people a few minutes to realize, you were on my character and you would be deleted and banned and I would get my stuff back.

ahem, could have sworn you have to have the char file to acces a char. its in your illarion folder when you create it. isnt this true? and if its not it should be this way (exept for the gm's of course)

Really? And what if "you" are pretending that someone else is playing with your character? You make your character do crazy things and then blame it on someone else. You will have to prove someone else did it...

No. All character info is stored on the server. The only thing you have on you computer is the file with the names of the people which introduced to you. You can access any character from any computer which has the Illarion client installed, all you need is the charname and the password.

so you could freely modify which items you have?
so that you would loose your inventory if you delete your char folder accidently?
the first rule in programing a game like this is, don't trust the user. ever.
anything the client would save could be modified to fit the needs of the player... so saving anything as important as inventory data on the client side would be just plainly stupid.

Just one thing about someone else stealing your char, the GMs can track your IP address (as can, and does, practically every other dang website you go to), so they can see if someone has gone on your char if they so choose, but i must say it must be quite a hastle to have to check that all the IP addresses that the users are using are the correct ones, and someone else is not using their computer.

You also can do enough damage the first time you log in with a hacked character, when the admins did not even recognize what you are doing..

It better not come round to the point where logging on in a diff IP will log you out or block the IP. I know some people who go on their chars in different places when they are away somewhere. I.E. Internet café's, a relatives house.. etc.

You would most likely get your stuff back, but I don't know if they would bann Darlok. Surely he wouldn't be dumb enough to access your character from his own Ip, duh.
And that would make proving that he was behind it a bit tricky.

Well now, not everyone is that inteligent.

Anyway, to what Hermie said, isn't it kind of hard to play Illarion in other places? I tried it at my friends house, and I didn't have my log, names, map, nothing of that sort. It was pretty hard playing unless you keep your stuff in your email or something.

Paul,
watch what you are saying here. This is nearly in Insult, so be careful.
By the way, even if your IP is almost like a Fingerprint, it is not impossible to change that "Fingerprint" in the Internet.
And Paul ... i am quite clever, belive me.

Well. of course you could always get a new internet provider.

Paul, what I meant was that sometimes people dont have the choice of where they are to play.

hmm i wonder if its possible to make it so you have to have a key file or something that way you have to have it to make it possible to run? small enough to put on a floppy, that way if you wanted to play on sum1 else's comp you could just put it on a floppy and put it on easy. and dorlak, dont dish it if you cant take it.

Grow'bill (yes its spelled wrong, look how you spelled my Name.)
You just need to copy the Names.dat and the Map-Files on a Floppy, download at the other PC the Client and extract the Files from your Floppy to the Folder.
Its realy that simple, just think about it.
And Grin'bowl, i dont "dish". If i would start to "dish" you or anybody, you would run away crying.
I am just sarcastic, ironic, unfriendly and selfish, but i dont "dish".
Your true Friend,
Darlok

oh boohoo i spelled your name wrong, you obviously didnt understand my post,im talking a file required to run that char that way people without the file cant run it. as for the gm's accesing it all the chars created could have this file stored in a folder that the gms could take a file out into another folder and then play as that person if need be.

Why creating a "Key-File" when you just need to have a good Password?
Posted: Sun Apr 13, 2003 4:36 pm

as the gm's say, never trust the user

This sounds like a good idea, but think about how many people have a floppy drive nowadays. Look at laptops now. No floppy drives. My desktop PC doesn't even have a working floppy drive in it. Also, not everyone has a CD burner, so not everyone can write the file onto a CD. You have to think of everything, good and bad about something. Agree Deerlock?

paul, if you dont have the internet your comp is probobly old and you have a floppy, otherwise you could send the file through instant messaging prog, not really any problem, because if you play this game you have to have the internet.
