Is there a way for the server to detect if someone is disconnected without hitting esc. to log out?

I have dial up and have been disconnected several times while in the middle of a fight with a zombie and end up getting killed.
When I try to get back on real quick it says I tried to log in twice.

Can the server detect any disconnections and log that player out automatically?

it does already see if you get disconnected and logs you out...
though it does not do so immediately to prevent loging off people if they have a slow connection or something like that...
