LIZARD LANGUAGE: Parts 3/3

Lizard Langauge

In Illarion, many races have longed to have their own learnable language. After many hours of extensive studying in the major library, a lizard simply known as “X”, with the help of a few scholars, made a language for all of lizardkind to use. The name for this language is called Haslus.

I – Meaning and Structure

Haslus is an SOV (subject, object, verb) language that uses the subject, object, then verb in order. For example:

English: I eat fish.
Haslus: I fish eat.

This may seem odd to some, but it isn’t very difficult. Just remember: SOV. This must go IN ORDER.

As most know, many lizards drag their ‘s’ sounds. The idea from “X” is to use these ‘s’ sounds to advantage, creating meaning based on how long it’s dragged. ‘S’ is said first to indicate the subject, ‘s’ is said to indicate the object, and ‘s’ is said to indicate the verb. To separate the subject, object, and verb, one must use the following to do so:

Subject Object Verb
s s s

For example: ss[fish]s[eats]

For some of you thinking ‘I probably shouldn’t speak this because it’s difficult to say,’ you must remember; practice must always come with something new. Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all.

II – Advanced Structure and Conjunctions

Like other languages, longer elaborations on structure and conjunction is a necessity for understanding. One of these conjunctions include ‘and.’ In Haslus, the letter ‘t’ means ‘and.’ In English, you would say “I think garbage is bad, stinky, and smelly.” You would say in Haslus “I garbage bad and stinky and smelly think.” Therefore:

Ex: ss[garbage]s[bad]t[stinky]t[smelly]s[think]

IMPORTANT: On a later note, descriptions come after the object like in English.

And the letter ‘y’ means ‘or.’

Ex: ss[garbage]s[bad]y[stinky]t[smelly]s[think]
In English, this is translated as: I think garbage is bad or stinky and smelly.

Now let’s try a tough example:

Bob and Jill are always thinking how happy or content the idiot really is.

Ex: s[Bob]t[Jill]s[idiot]s[happy]y[content]s[think]t[always]

or:

I ran far into the field.

Ex: ss[field]s[far+into]s[ran]

To ask a question, you simply add a ‘q’ at the end of each sentence to show that it’s a question.

If you haven’t noticed already, lizards NEVER use punctuation while they talk. However, spaces are optional between SOV separations (s s[field]) although I personally don’t. This means no periods, question marks, capitalization, etc.

Remember, that this is a world above water. This means that vocabulary terms that are not currently listed are simply what they are in English. If introducing a name, you may capitalize the first letter. But that is the only exception.

For example: The bucket is mine, and has no water.

Ex: smetaphuisbucketyhilunik

Basically, any word that isn’t currently listed, you can use it as English/German.

Example: I am Bob.
Ex: svernasBob.

(Yes, objects also = nouns)

To make something plural, you add a 'z' by the way.

Why not just say

#me says in the lizard tounge "do not buy from him, I dislike him"

by Cuderon
Actually this would be boring. Or are you always doing: #me says in human language: This pancake is too hot!

It is nice to have an efford to understand at least some phrases of the language spoken by an other race, as long as it is described.

Quel kaima.

Just print out a sheet of grammer rules and vocab. Keep it handy to refer to.

This is bad rp in my eyes,
How can your Character understand what the lizard say? Maybe you, the player can understand it, but if you are an elf or another race than lizard, how can you speak and understand lizard language?

You are aware, X made this post almost a year ago and maybe doesn't feel the same way?

Regardless, I think it would be okay to implement this language. Dwarven language might sound annoying to another race, Galim. It's IG, not OOC.

Cuderon, I have an idea. To make a verb infinitve just an en' to it. So the werb would have to infront of it. like en'uma is to do. I f I am correct.

Try to make the words more lizard-sounding. Hissing Sounds should be often used, like "sh", "ss", "sk", "sr" and the like. Prefer "o" and "a" as nouns.

by Setherioth
yes but if he uses 's' in words when it would be very confusing to try and determine where s is supposed to be and or part of the word because there are no spaces.

I remember that...whoever pulled it back out of the pits of the boards should be shot.

No, not really. But regardless, if we want to keep it going, I'm going to need some major help with a new format or something, if Damien's suggestion bodes well.

There is a simple solution for this.

If you are not playing a lizardman, don't study the language. Even if you know it, don't speak it. The Haslus speaking lizardmen will probably look at you funny because you lack the tongue necessary to speak it properly, or understand it.

The 's' that replaces spaces in the language is supposed to be used for the hissing sounds. I can add more vocabulary to make it sound like hissing, assuming it doesn't get more confusing.

Anyway...I'm in the midst of updating the language again, so it would be nice to check back often.

I really love to speak it.

Yes but people like, mr. Giandor, the librarian obvoisly studies alot, therefore might have a rough understanding. He could "try" as in "pronounce" or spell it wrong, makinging it hard to understand to fluent speakers.
