FNAR Guide for labeling of potions
Update remark from 02.Chos 65:
Notes by Shiba Tsukimi on names of amethyst effects and presentation of active ingredient levels have been incorporated.
Potions can have many different effects, desired as well as undesired.
Therefore, it is important that a potion is labeled as clearly as possible to its effect.
The following list should be a suggestion for the labeling, especially for Runewicker alchemists to provide the users with a uniform and understandable designation of the potions. This kind of designation which is supplemented by a sign of the potion maker stands at the same time for the origin and quality of the potion. The author attaches importance to understandable and well-known terms which are unified as far as possible. Therefore, in the suggestions for the designation of the effects, common terms that are or were already used by well-known alchemists were given priority.
The basic structure of the potion labeling should look like this:
[maker's sign] (effect) (level) (quality class).
The standard for effect and quality class terms is the new language.
Maker's Sign:
This should contain a signature or designation of the alchemist, either his name, trademark, or unique initials known as a trademark.
Effect:
The effect of the potion should be described with a unique short description that makes a distinctive statement about the content and effect of the potion.
Level:
Potions that are based on ruby dust or amethyst dust can have their effects set at different levels. The reasons for this can be different. A desired dosage of an effect can be made this way, or potions with multiple effects can be made easier this way.
The scale of the level ranges reach in the positive from 1 to 4 and in the negative from -1 to -4. Agents that have the neutral level 0 are not indicated.
Example of a ruby-based potion:
[Doros Brews] STR/AGI3/ESS-2/WIL-3 - Medium
This potion raises the Strength trait to level 4, raises the Speed trait to level 3, and lowers the Essence and Willpower traits to level 2 each.
Quality class:
Each potion consists of a variety of ingredients. Despite careful control, individual parts of the additions can always be of more or less poor quality, which then affects the quality. An experienced alchemist will usually notice poor quality additions sooner than a beginner. Basically, however, all alchemists are exposed to quality fluctuations and therefore potions with different overall quality succeed, which is reflected either in the strength effect, or the duration of the effect. Potions of different qualities nevertheless all have their uses. However, the quality levels are very fine, and in practice it has been shown that it is sufficient to divide the potions into the three quality classes High, Medium and Low.
The assignment of the individual quality levels to the three quality classes is as follows:
Quality class
"High" contains:
Quality class
"Medium" contains:
Quality class
"Low" contains:
Ametyst dust based potions:
Since potions based on ametyst dust have only the four basic effects* of healing, mana, saturation and detoxification, complex multiple effects do not occur in practice. Therefore, in contrast to ruby dust based potions, acronyms can be omitted.
*Special potions such as Dragon's Breath, which are also based on ametyst dust, are given the appropriate special designation.
- Healing - The effect is healing
- Mana - The effect is increase of mana for arcane persons
- Nutriton - The effect is saturation
- Antidote - The effect is detoxification
These effects can also be combined and named accordingly.
For the negative effects of these effects (disease, loss of mana, hunger and poisoning) there are no potion designations, because the production of such mixtures should only be done for research purposes, and they should never be circulated as potions.
In order to achieve the desired effect of a potion with less effort (herbs), unbalanced potions with side effects can be created, which have undesirable effects on certain groups of people and are therefore only targeted at certain groups. The potion names are then given a note in the form of a code for when the potion is not suitable.
The following coding should be chosen:
NM = No Mage Has negative effects on mage attributes.
NW = No Warrior Has negative effects on attributes of warriors
NA = No Archer Has a negative effect on the attributes of archers.
This list will be expanded as needed.
Examples:
[Doros Brews] Healing - High
[Doros Brews] Healing NM - Medium
[Doros Brews] Antidote NW - High
[Doros Brews] Healing/Antidote 2 - High (full healing level 4, detoxification level 2)
We are still discussing a workable solution for the designation of temporal effects. Since alchemists usually aim for both temporal effects, "immediate" and "slow", the need for a distinction is only necessary in exceptional cases and should be noted accordingly on the potion.
Potions based on ruby dust:
Multiple effects are common with ruby dust based potions. Therefore, it is useful to name these effects with uniform acronyms, each of which is then combined with the level of the effect.
Example:
[Doros Brews] STR/AGI/DEX-2 - High (Strength and Speed level 4, Dexerity level 2)
This approach is useful here because there are numerous possible combinations.
Fancy names like "Berserker Rage" or "Wisdom for All" should not be used, because even customers who sometimes order these potions under these names do not know after some time which exact effects the potion actually has. Verification of the potion can then only be done by a trained alchemist.
Uniform acronyms for effects of ruby dust based potions:
STR = Strength, Power
INT = Intelligence, Learning
DEX = Dexterity, Skill
PER = Perception
CON = Condition, Endurance
ESS = Essence
AGI = Agility, Speed
WIL = Willpower
Note, the specifics of the above effects will be covered in another post in this notebook. This post is exclusively about the names of potions.
Special potions:
Special potions are potions that have a very specific effect with a unique recipe. These include, for example, transformation potions, all kinds of bombs, language potions, but also very special potions developed by alchemists. These potions are then given the same name as the recipe, which is only supplemented by the quality class.
Examples:
[Doros Brews] Dragon Breath - Medium
[Doros Brews] Small Explosion - High
History and future of this guide
The suggestion for a uniform labeling of the potions came one from Alrik Grimmler. Djironnyma then instructed Elynah to hold a discussion on how a uniform labeling could look. At this meeting in the faculty in Runewick no final result was reached, but several suggestions from that time have been incorporated into the present guide.
Labels on bottles are not chiseled or engraved, so we have flexibility for the future to incorporate constructive feedback and suggestions into this guide.
The aim is to create a clear labeling method for all those willing to do so, allowing both masters and students of alchemy to clearly label their products. In addition, interested customers have the opportunity to learn about the effects noted on the bottles in this public notebook. Furthermore, interested customers have the possibility to inform themselves about the effects noted on the bottles in this public notebook.
