well...its kind of unrealistic to let an evil person or a criminal just walk around town freely...

Exactly.
You mistake evil roleplaying for being a criminal or psychopatic person. And kills in town are no sacrifice... guy you need tu build a temple.

Exactly. We need a kind of disclaimer at program start or character generation where roleplay is defined or something.

@Damien: Talking about the sort of disclaimer that pops up in EVERY client currently in use?
@Peace Keeper: How about starting your roleplaying with a roleplaying name?
@Roleplaying in general: In the future there will be a system where you have to apply for a character account in Illarion. In this application you will most likely be required to tell something about the background of your character and your definition of roleplaying. And you must provide a real email address. This way, you can't get a new account fast, after you have been kicked from the game and you won't get an account at all, if you aren't at least sure what roleplaying is.
I suppose this would realy cut down the amount of players (depends on how strict the GMs are with the applications. If it was me approving the applications it would be cut down to 20% of todays size).
This would increase the amount of roleplaying a lot. Better players would be attracted by the game (those good roleplayers that stop by from time to time now, see the sad level of RPG since they meet the wrong players, and leave forever).
Last but not least, the staff can concentrate on improving the game, making RPG quests etc. Right now, most of the time is needed to handle players we never wanted to play this game (i.e. control the rules) and answering questions that originate mostly in the misunderstanding of roleplaying ("why can't I cast deadly spells on myself?", "Why aren't there numbers in my skilllist?", "I can't be evil without violating the rules!")
We were talking about an recommended age for Illarion. As a matter of fact, the most times I had to punish players, it were a childs. Older players try to behave at least after they have been warned. I don't think this should be a "hard" age limit (i.e. you CAN'T play if you are younger). It should be a recommendation (you can't proove your age at the internet anyway) since some 13 year old behave like 18 while 18 year old persons might be as childish as an 8 year old.....
I would suggest an age of 16 to play Illarion in a roleplaying style and I doubt that a person below 12 would be able to roleplay.

well about the age thing to play..ANYONE could choose that they are over 13..thats not hard...what would you do about that?
and besides that, yes i think that illarion needs more roleplayers..
not people who say:
"hey dude can i have a firesword plz?
"wow thx man, l8tr!"

Well...I'll be the first to admit that when I first came to Illarion my objectives were
1) Get sympathy from other players and get them to help me become strong
2) Kill Kill Kill!!!
Back then I didn't have this "roleplaying" mentality yet and I didn't know what was the difference between this and the other games, say Tibia (I've never played it though) since there was scarcely any roleplaying in other games that I've played. I don't know exactly when, but somewhere along the way as I played the game, I began to understand what was roleplaying. (Hmm I think the first time I ever saw anyone roleplaying was Damien. When I first met him, I was standing in the tavern casting ice spells everywhere for no apparent reason and he was casting fire spells everywhere because he was doing the "mad mage" story thing. Heh it was kinda like two crazy guys there. Then he starting talking about some strange things (in typical damien fashion

) and I started to get interested in what he had to say next and started interacting with him and play along). If the email application is used, we may miss out on the rare diamond in the desert that develops into a great roleplayer (although its probably really rare). I probably never would have played this game if I had to go through the process of writing an email describing a background story for my character and waiting for a reply before I even knew what the game was like and whether it would be worth playing (can you imagine how horribly boring this world would've been if I never showed up?

).
So if the application system is used, then I would have to say there needs to be a lot of brushing up done to make the game seem more attractive (for starters maybe completing the english sections of the webpage? And maybe a little redesigning to get rid of the sideways scroll bar? because its really annoying when everytime you scroll down to the next post you have to scroll left to see the name of who posted it, then scroll back to the right to see the entire post. Plus my web design teacher once told me that a sideways scroll bar is a sign of a bad webpage  ). Also the application system might bring in more quality players who can roleplay, but there's not much roleplaying to do when there's nobody online to roleplay with....
I don't know if I'm against or for the application system yet but these are just a few setbacks that i see. I think the 16 year old recommendation is a good idea though.
You know what, all this talk has made me want to go out there and turn every person I meet in Illarion into a good roleplayer! When in doubt just repeat after yourself "Dyluck can do it! So can I! Yeah! GOGOGOGOGO!"
#me runs out onto the battlefield holding a book about roleplay and swinging his sword in the air.
@bror: oh and one question...if you rarely ever go in the game or check the rpg board, how do you know who roleplays and who doesn't, and the 20% thing?

whooaaa dy drop that sword!!
#me dodges the old mans feeble attempt to hack him into lil peices..
=) anyways like i was saying..
yes i wish more roleplayers were in illarion.
Im 18 irl and have been playing many roleplaying games since i was 14.
ultima online, diablo 1,2, tiba(recently), baldurs gate, everquest. so on so on..
the point im trying to make is. maybe some of these people are new to the roleplaying area..but if they would go to the illarion website and TAKE SOME TIME TO READ THE FAQ, then they would see how they are suppost to act and talk..
All im saying is, its sad how many non roleplayers are here, and also how many beggers are here...
and dyluck, yes this world would be very horrible and boring if ye didnt arrive =)

Dyluck where would I be without you?! hehe
I'll put in my two cents as usual.
Online application hmm..
Maybe bror yuo can make a spectator player.
Those who haven't yet applied can come into illarion as spectator #1 ect.. they cant be killed, can talk and have no items.. only walk around and look. Yes it might be boring but for serious inqueries of the game it will be enough.
As far as applications you have to ask what are you looking for.
Masture roleplaying or Possibility of good roleplayer
Perhaps the application should contain the following
Character name: (Solves that problem)
Character background: (No.. lost memory no background characters allowed) "i say no lost memory because in my experience you get alot of that.. I call it Lazy RP and god it gets annoying after you meet joe/jane doe #5
Character Alignment: (eg. Neutral good evil, or combonation) "for refrence this is a maybe on the app in my opinion"
Character description:
(though thier characters may not "look" as they said to us.. In character they can. Maybe down the years this may change)
Define Roleplaying in your own words:
(A biggy as your said bror)
What is the diffrence between out of character OOC and in character IC
(Basic Roleplay knowledge though some may not know.)
Describe walking into the castle gardens in roleplay form:
(this gives an idea of actual roleplay, creativity and age)
Dy, yes an application may discourage some people.. including the diamond in the rough, but it's just like the buisness world. You can satify everyone, only the majority that will cause the maximum curve.
Perhaps someone will think of a better way, but I could not despite myself. So i thought up some things for the App. I love making these. If anyone has suggestions to dd please list them, but lets not go beserk and make it a mile long. Just basics and enough to l earn what we need.
bror I assume you will have a submission and a
"We will email you within 24 hours"
and it will be a rejection letter saying "sorry we are looking for a certain ect..
Or a acceptance letter saying "Your name has been created, this is the password *****"
and it would be good to have a change password command.
Goodnight everyone.

How do I know what is happening in game?
- I can see it from the board,
- I listen to what the GMs tell me,
- I read a lot while I look into the logs when I receive complaints about players
- I get a lot of emails every day
- I see what names they have. I don't suspect that players with names like "xy 8" and "Miss piggy" are roleplayers.
How do I get the 20%? This is of course a guess from me, I haven't checked all 13000 players.
@Pasha: "what wrong with "l8tr" "2" "C U"...it sound right so why we shount use it?? "
Imagine reading the "Lord of the rings". You read a five page lyrical description of Frodo leaving Lothlorien. The fifth page ends with Galadriel saying "Hope 2 cu l8tr!".
I hope you figure out why this is wrong. If not, you might be one of the persons this game wasn't created for.
@Dipstick: "well about the age thing to play..ANYONE could choose that they are over 13..thats not hard...what would you do about that? "
I want to answer by citing the text you replied to: "It should be a recommendation (you can't proove your age at the internet anyway) since some 13 year old behave like 18 while 18 year old persons might be as childish as an 8 year old..... "
Many persons say, they know RPG, but they have only played computer RPGs (single player). The interaction with the computer is almost one, so this kind of games are Hack'N'Slash too (mostly, don't know any oposite example). Which computer game forces you to make verbal description of what you do and talk to other persons (other than "buy", "sell", "enemy"...)? The only games I know are online RPGs and they are mostly populated by hack'n'slash gamers, so you can't learn anything there. So you can only know real roleplay from pen&paper/LARP games or from the rare online games that have roleplaying players (I don't think Illarion is a good place to learn until now either).
@Dyluck: Sure we will not get players that might develop to good roleplayers after a while. But without the email application, I guess we will never get many persons that can roleplay already. If it was me to choose, I would rather take the ones already know RPG than choosing to get 100 players where 5 might turn to good roleplayers and the other 95 spoil the good players away, take my time by inspecting rule violations, give me complaints to work on ....
The server will be a lot less frequented than now. Thats why we wait with the email application system, so we have a large enough player base to choose from (and they can learn to RPG now - but how if almost noone does?)
@Sabrina: I guess the spectator players would be abused for instance to spam (they must be able to talk, to learn about the game). Your ideas for the application are good, but we might be foreced to find a balance between "beeing sure it is a roelplayer" and "not turning away players by forcing them to write a five hour examination before playing".

Bror, I RPG alot, the name isn't used as a "name" for myself... at least this char anyways. For this char, it's only served as title. As I've mentioned in the story on the RPG board, name's Peggy, Peggy Komoshio. I suppose people in the time had some luntics only tell people their title given by others rather then their full name. Don't you think?

Because training and sparring is not a planned function of the game. It is use of combat related skills with the only goal to increase skills as quickly as possible. For that, even ridiculous things like sparring with NEEDLES are done.
Did you EVER see Knights in a movie spar with a NEEDLE ? or even with sharp weapons hurting each other ? No.
For real "SPARRING", you would need SPARRING WEAPONS. Like wooden weapons and training weapons.
Real "training" is not implememted in the game yet.

You CAN roleplay. But your trial at playing an evil role had desastrous consequences. Okay, evil roleplaying is a hard thing to do. Better stick to "good" roles, they don't have the potential to change into killing desasters.
