Smart Doves

I have had this idea for some time now, but today I have an example.
I would like an option placed in the character creation menu to offer direct mail. We have DOB, description and story. This would be accept doves.
Not every character has a forum account that matches their characters name. So if I go on the online list and click on, "Send dove" I can directly mail that character.
I am aware of its many uses and abuses, but for my today example...
I promised a character today I would try and help them, but after a bit, my WiFi went down. Once I was able to reconnect, they were obviously gone, but still online. I wanted to send a dove, but didnt know their Forum account. So I ran all around the map but failed to find them.
If this was an option, and they chose to be part of it, i could of just pulled up their online character description, hit a button, and sent a dove to them.
It will help bring us all closer together, and possible make us hate spam more. ;) But I think it should be an option. If you dont want it, dont select it.

Wouldn't a simple link in your account to the forum account in the description be sufficient? Something like ((Send doves to the forum account XYZ)).

There was one the idea to connect the forum with your char accounts. I think the idea was that every character you create could have something like an own forum account or so. But that has no high priority and I guess there are no plans to work on that any time soon.

Everyone is free to publish emails or links to forum accounts in the text. For emails, I warn against that. You do not want to publish your email like this, trust me.

So I fail to see the use of this. Let us focus on ingame options to bring players together, ok?

I'm with Estralis here. You really don't want your mail on the public website. From implementation side it's not a problem. And all the crawlers who collect e-mail addresses for spam mail lists will be very happy to. But I don't think you will be happy in long term.

But still I see your point Hew. But I would much rather like to see that in game than outside of the game.
And this brings us to the postal system in the game I'd really like to have... with 5min delivery magical express doves.

And then, we would only lack an ingame town board to be awesome :P

While it might not necessarily be historically realistic (and who cares about that?) I've seen UO shards that had a mail system where you can send and receive messages as well as packages at the bank (and even send them COD). In Illarion's case, we could use bags instead. It would be a good way to take commerce off the boards, IRC, and private messengers and put it ingame.

But especially CoD would greatly decrease RP whilst trading.

Just a thought I could be in left field but hey I'll say it and hopefully don't sound dumb.

We have a way to let GMs know we need help in game right. Well can't something like that be put in game except have it be a NPC and you ask him to send a dove. Or a the system that let's us select to go help some one when it pops up. Just a thought.

Sure. The options we have are almost unlimited. What is limited is the manpower to implement all ideas.

Wish I could help but the last time I did any type of development of a game was back in 2000 on my ti86 calculator. If I knew some on willing to teach Ill learn it. Have a nack for computers.
