Making gemcutting more useful

The facts are this: Finesmithing has very limited practical use (its results dont paperdoll, and they don't increase attributes or do much else)
Gemcutting is even worse because they make the gems for the amulets and rings that don't do anything.
So here's a proposal for making it a worthwhile trade:
1. Allow gemcutters to desocket magic gems from weapons with tongs (or any other tool/method)
2. Allow for gemcutting to have a very tiny chance to yield a latent magic gem of the given type being cut

Finesmithing is more than just rings and necklaces, theres weapons and armors that can only be crafted by finesmithing. Gem cutting is very helpful for smithing, finesmithing and even more so for Alchemy. Magic gems are seriously too easy to get, dont make it easier. and gemsmiths being able to desocket gems while extremely useful, it would deprive the game of the money sink of paying 10 golds to desocket.
look to the rich guys... its not warriors or smiths or woodsmiths anymore... its finesmiths! finesmithing is profitable, maybe it doesnt help combat or make you look good but it makes certain items and gold... thats enough in my book.

Gem cutting is far beyond useless. As Mephistopheles pointed out, it is "support craft" for various crafts (not only finesmeithing) and alchemy. There are many crafst which are way more rarely used.

Agreed, gem cutting is the one skill I see more often taken up in game to support others. People seem to always need cut gems or powders and they can get way too expensive to buy from an NPC. I believe we have at least 5 people training on gem cutting in Galmair alone right now. And those are only the ones Uhuru knows about. That number could actually be much higher.
Should gem cutting create a more useful end product? I don't see how it could. I don't see any other craft that creates a product that is needed by so many. This one skill creates two products that are needed by nearly every crafter/alchemist at some point. What more could a crafter want?

well stated Uhuru.. Gina was not going to ever gem cut... but needed the gems for crafting..She now trains - and has found she can sell what she can not use to many other citizens.
