Unconcious

Iris fell endlessly through a wonderland of dreams. Her body lay where it had been placed; listless, feverish, rapidly changing between being overheated and chilled. Occasionally her eyes would open, rapidly as she was sucked from a dream, or slowly with the exhaustion of her state. It is all she can do to ellicit a moan, or a brief mumbling of human words before the warm tendrils of the dreamworld pull her back into its clutches.
Her sleep, if sleep you can call it, is filled with the terrors and treasures of her inner world, loves and losses and visions mixed into amalgom after amalgom. A swirling cacophany of colors and sounds, impossible to rationalize and moving too fast to encapture. Yet occasionally, as the fever breaks, lucidity extends a spindly hand and tugs her into a deeper nightmare.
This is about one of those times. She kneels in the desert, holding her staff tightly and watching the sand swirl about in the wind. The thin fabric of her hood stops the sand, but still allows her to see out. Above her stretches an endless haze of grey sky, combining with the yellows of the sand to cause an almost eerie mood.
Then he was there. A dark figure coming closer, hooded like herself. Sitting beside her. Removing her hood and kissing her. She says nothing as he takes her into his arms. Crack! It is a sudden explosion that seperates him from her, both jolting with the volume and proximity of the blast. Her head throbs as she twists around in search of the source.
Expanses of endless desert in all directions. The wind melts down into nothing, the only sound audible being the sharp ringing in her ears. She turns back to him, wanting comfort from the uneasiness within. He only stares at her. He tells her what she does not understand, and he does. He tells her the sound came from within her.
Then he kisses her again. She stills, mind blank as her body returns the gesture. Another crack rings out, louder than before. He picks up his staff, gives her one last look, and walks off into the distance. Tears of loneliness slide down her cheeks. Desperation. Running through the sand in every direction in a desperate attempt to find him. He is gone.
Then there is a mirage of the following weeks. She searches for him. Occasionally sees him, struggles to get closer. He walks away. Over and over until all she can do is scream and sob.
Finally she reaches him. Grabs for him. Begs him to explain why he has ran from her. His replies are confusing, soft and emotionless in tone yet deep and loving in content. This time, it is Iris who turns and runs away. He calls out to her. She stops. He gasps out his love for her, grabbing her shoulders and turning her around to kiss her again.
The inevitable explosion rings out like thunder. She stumbles back in the pain of it, and he collapses to the ground. A feeling like flaming mud descends upon her as she realizes he is dead.
She does not realize she dropped her staff as she turns to run away. She just runs, bare feet pressing into the earth and cloak flying out behind her. Tears stream her face, and horribly guilty lightness surges through her. Freedom.
She is still running as she slips back into incoherency.
