Missing in Action

Post by bdgdkay »

It was cold. Almost too cold. The army was marching again. They must have been marching for months now. The men were cold and weary, dragging on through the heavy snow of the north. The soldiers' morale was fading, the food nearly gone, and they did not know when their march would end. The snow was blinding. One could barely see thirty paces in any direction.

He had an ominous feeling. He felt as though he had relived this moment a thousand times. He marched in line with every other soldier in the legion. All he could think about was his home, his daughter. He could not remember how he came to be seperated from her, ending up stuck in this army once again. He looked at the soldier to his left. He did not know his name, nor anything about him. There was nothing personal about this army. No one knew anyone by anything but a number. He slowly looked to his right. His brow furrowed. The man on his right was gone. He tried to make sense of how he would simply dissapear like such, but everything seemed to be in a haze. Then, the man infront of him dropped, an arrow piercing his neck.

Everything seemed to happen so fast. The sound of marching turned rapidly into the blaring of horns, the drawing of swords, the clashing of iron. Clubs clashed with shields, swords with armor. Chaos erupted in the normally organized ranks of men. They had been ambushed. It soon became a matter of every man for himself, against an enemy that came from nowhere, and seemed to be all but endless. Everything seemed to be moving so fast, but at the same time, it stood still.

He saw the captain fighting two adversaries, and rushed to his aid. The first he threw like a ragdoll aside with a swing swipe of his arm, then running through the other with the blade attached to his left arm. As soon as his opponents fell they were replaced by thrice their number. He fought as long as he could, but he knew it was a lost cause. Then he felt that stunning blow to the back of his head.

He jolted awake as soon as he felt it. That dream had haunted him every night since it had been a reality. He knew not how long ago that had been though. It felt like an eternity, but he knew it couldnt have been more than a couple weeks, months at most. He looked around his cell, struggling against the chains that bound him to the stone wall. He was trapped, and he had no idea what his captors intended for him.

Iris sat, silent and motionless in a dark cave. She was alone, completely and entirely. First her father's disapearance, then Seredoc's betrayal, then Joseph's desertion, and now Alvis had dissapeared too. Everyone she cared about most, all gone, and she did'nt have any idea when she would get them back, if ever. She had been in the cave for days, thinking, hoping, praying for her father to come back. He would know what to do, he always did.

A rat scurried across the floor, but Iris's body did'nt move. No, she was deep in mediation, searching her mind and soul for any comfort her memories may hold. But each day they held less and less.
