http://geocities.com/first_impact/academy/future.htm

This is a fictional story that takes place 4000 years after present day Illarion (still medieval fantasy of course, not futuristic). It is based on characters and events that exist in present day Illarion, but the reality of Illarion may not actually turn out that way. This is only a fictional story taking place 4000 years later.

The link has been in the links section for a while now, but I haven't announced its existence until now. Only the introduction and first part of the storybook is completed right now. It hasn't been updated so there's no need to check it again if you've seen it already. I need to decide whether I should continue the rest of the story in the "interactive storybook" format currently used for Chapter 1 which is kinda fun, or just write it in a regular story format which would create a better atmosphere for crucial moments in the story. So please take a look here and give me your opinion or vote.

Completed so far:
Chapter 1: First Day of Class
Chapter 2: Nobles and Peasants
Chapter 3: Rarities in the Desert
Chapter 4: News and Announcements
Chapter 5: Long Lost Elves
Chapter 6: Sibling Reunion

Here's a taste of how the story would go if it were in normal story format, so you compare it with the storybook format. This is Chapter 2, so if you haven't, you may want to take a look at Chapter 1 first here:

Chapter 2: Nobles and Peasants

The days went by quickly and the days soon turned into weeks and weeks into months. Winter solstice had arrived and much more snow poured over the floating city of Baijore than usual. With the cold chilly climate up in Baijore at this time of the year, the students of the Magic Academy were given two weeks off from their studies. Many festivities commenced in the land below at this time and it was not uncommon for people to head to the beautiful city of Mairo in the Norgoon Desert region for the Moonlight Festivals. Pike, Magenta, and Brashon, decided that they would join the festivities there once again this year. Riding on their horses, they trotted across the Lorgan region where most peasants resided, with a small handful of servant guards with them.

As the evening came, they decided to stop for the night at a small town. The three friends left their horses and belongings with the servants who made the arrangements at the local inn, while they decided to take a look around town.

“What a filthy little hovel” Brashon commented as they walked along.
Though the residents couldn’t hear him, the miners and vendors outside glanced at them as they passed. The locals could easily recognize their nobility from their clothes and it wasn’t often that nobles were in their town, even though it was more common this time of the year.
“Come now, it’s not that bad” replied Pike.
Magenta walked quietly on Pike’s right with Brashon on his left.
They stopped in front of what appeared to be a fruit store where the merchandise was stacked in crates outside.

The shopkeeper wasn’t one to miss his chance. “Good day sirs! How about buying some apples, freshly picked!”
Brashon frowned as he looked around the fruits, where a fly or two buzzed around. “How filthy.”
He shook his head disapprovingly as he turned his head back to face the others and noticed two rough looking boys about their age, staring at them from nearby. One of them sat on the well with his arm crossed while the other stood slouching with one foot on the well, elbow resting on his knee. They muttered to each other and grinned mockingly while looking at the three. Brashon kept eyeing them as he talked to Pike and Magenta. Annoyed with their stares, Brashon finally marched over to them, with Pike and Magenta following behind, not knowing what was going on.

“What are you two peasants staring at?” snapped Brashon.
The one sitting on the well looked at him “I stare at what I want. You got a problem with that kid?”
“How dare you talk to me like that!” exclaimed Brashon. “You’re lucky I haven’t stricken you down for your insolence!”
The other boy laughed “Ha! Are you trying to pick a fight you little boy?”
“Don’t call me little! I could land you on your back anytime, you graceless ruffians! I’ll have you know I’m an elite student of the Magic Academy!” returned Brashon.
The boy snorted “You snotty little nobles and your magic. Without magic, you’re nothing! I bet you wouldn’t last one minute in a hand to hand combat!”
“Hmph, I don’t need magic to defeat the likes of you, come on bring it on!” Brashon rolled his sleeves up.
“Alright, now we’re talking” the other boy grinned as he got of the well and approached him.
“No, Brashon. Calm down, no need to fight.” Pike put an arm around Brashon trying to hold him back, but Brashon pushed his arm away.
“Don’t worry, I’m going to teach these peasants a lesson.” smiled Brashon confidently.

Brashon and the other boy circled each other, staring each other down. Then they lunged at each other with fists flying. The other boy quickly landed a strong blow to Brashon’s face, knocking him down. “Is that the best you can do?” he laughed.
Brashon got up again and charged him and eventually he was on the ground again. Grumbling angrily, he charged again only to find his feet swept out from under him by the other boy. The boy then began to pummel Brashon in the face with his fists.

Seeing the situation, Pike quickly tried to run over to intervene, only to find himself grabbed by the other boy who had been sitting on the well. Pike was a commendable fighter but he was without his spear and he had been caught by surprised. The boy’s strong grip held him tightly and then his other arm came up around Pike’s neck, strangling him. Pike gasped for breath, unable to break free and watching Brashon get pummeled mercilessly.

Then there was a sound, the sound of music. It was music coming from the flute of Magenta as she played a song she had learned in bard class. The attackers ceased their onslaught, clasping their ears with their hands as they grimaced painfully. Pike and Brashon slowly moved away, watching their attackers struggle, as they could hear nothing but the soothing melody themselves. Unable to bare the suffering, the two locals fled away, hands covering their ears.

Magenta and Pike helped Brashon to his feet.
“Wow, I had no idea your bard magic was so strong already Magenta! Thanks for saving us!” Pike said to Magenta.
“You’re welcome. It was nothing really” the girl smiled.
“She must’ve had a good teacher,” Brashon muttered as he rubbed his cheek painfully.
“Come on, let’s bring you back to the inn and get you fixed up” said Pike.

Together, the three made their way back to the inn where their servants attended to their bruises and cuts. They offered to look for the two boys who did this, but Pike told them it was unnecessary.
“If I ever see those two again, I’m going to show them my lightning bolt and teach those worthless peasants a lesson!” snorted Brashon in his chair as a servant wrapped bandages around his arm.
“Hey peasants aren’t worthless Brashon,” replied Pike sitting next to him. “Don’t forget that Magenta saved us today, and she’s a peasant too.”
Brashon turned away, looking elsewhere without giving a reply. Magenta stood silently next to Pike, holding her hands together.

Here comes the next chapter. It all seems like a lot, but I hope people are reading it anyways
I promise a great story if you stick with me to the end.
It helps a lot if you go read Chapter 1 first so you know what's going on.

Chapter 3: Rarities In The Desert

After traveling through the Lorgan region for a few days, the three finally arrived at the beautiful city of Mairo in the Norgoon desert region before noon. The sun shone brightly against the multi-colored tents and stalls of the festival. Merchants from all over the world were gathered there, with many unique and strange wares for sale. Brashon kept himself occupied looking all types of magic accessories, while Pike and Magenta walked around nearby.

The two stopped in front of a merchant who had all kinds of exotic wares laid out in a cloth in front of him. There were rings, ritual daggers, mirrors, musical instruments, perfume bottles, and other ornaments. One of them caught Magenta’s eyes.
“Look at that” said Magenta to Pike, pointing at one of the merchandise.
It was a necklace of a white colored gem shaped like a bird.
“Isn’t it beautiful” murmured Magenta as she picked it up in her hands for a closer look.
Pike watched her as she inspected the necklace, and he could tell that she really like it from the sparkle in her eyes.

“Ah, a fine choice!” the merchant tried to make a sale. “The Charm of the Snow Bird is said to bring good luck and fortune in matters of love for those who wear it. Only 750 gold coins for this fine necklace!”
Magenta gently put the necklace back down and smiled, shaking her head. “Oh, a small chance of admiration is I can ask for. I could never afford to buy such an expensive thing.”
Pike was about to offer to buy the necklace for her but then she spoke first as music began to play nearby.
“Look Pike, the show is starting. Let’s go watch!” she grabbed his arm and pulled him towards where the performance was taking place. Pike looked back at the merchant and his location. He would come back to buy the necklace later.

They watched as the first performance began with several dancers twirling around in brightly colored dresses lace with tiny jewels that sparkled against the bright beaming sun. Then the second performance featured acrobats balancing each other and all sorts of other objects like plates and poles. Brashon soon joined the other two in watching and a big crowd had gathered around the stage by now. Another incredible act drew a loud round of applause from the audience. Several more performances followed and soon it came to a play. The play was just a typical story about a knight rescuing a princess from a dragon. The play was drawing near its end where the knight had slain the dragon and was reaching out his hand to the maiden. Then to the crowd’s surprise, the princess let out a loud shriek. The crowd murmured, wondering what was going on, as did the other actors. Then she pointed somewhere behind the back of the crowd.

Everyone turned around and saw what she had screamed for. At the entrance to the city, a horse had just stopped and riding on him was a soldier, covered in blood and gasping for breath. He fell off his horse as a crowd gathered around him to try and help him.

“Orcs….at the Desert Palace” the man coughed, trying to catch his breath.
The crowd gasped and whispered amongst themselves.
“An army of orcs… they appeared out of nowhere…. attacked… took the Fire Crystal….”
The crowd whispered even louder.

“That’s impossible! There hasn’t been any orcs around here since the great war twenty years ago!” a man in the crowd blurted. “And besides, if the Fire Crystal was taken away, then why would it still be so hot around here?”
The crowd muttered in agreement. The bloody soldier shook his head, still trying to catch his breath. “No, it’s true….”

Barely able to stand on his feet without the aid of others, he reached into his bag and took out a letter marked with the official seal of the Norgoon region’s governor.
The man gasped, “I must get… this letter... to headmaster Synapsis… and warn everyone… the orcs….”

Chapter 4: News and Announcements

Pike stood in a line of 6th Grade Spellcasters in the auditorium of the Magic Academy. Brashon was somewhere in the line of 7th Grade Spellcasters next to him and Magenta was further away in a line with the other students of her Bard Class. It was the first day back at the Academy from the winter solstice break, and news of orc attack on the Desert Palace had spread throughout the land. All the students had been filed into the auditorium this morning, whispering amongst themselves about the rumors as they waited for the headmaster to appear.

The commotion subsided when headmaster Synapsis walked in from the open door. He walked up the middle and up to the elevated platform as everyone became quiet and kept their eyes on him. Then he spoke, in that calm mysterious voice.

“Good morning students and faculty of the Magic Academy. I am happy to welcome you all back once again, but soon we shall be parting once again.

Many confused looks appeared on the faces of the listeners.
“As you may have heard the rumors already, the Desert Palace was attacked by an army of orcs, who took away the Fire Crystal. I assure you that this is a fact, not just a rumor.

The looks of confusion turned to worried faces.
Pike thought to himself. ‘But if the Fire Crystal was stolen, then why is the desert still hot? Wasn’t it the Fire Crystal that created the heat in the Norgoon Desert?’

“The orcs are alive and well and their army was very strong and organized. This may very well mean that they are trying to take over Illarion once again. It seems that their objective is to seize the seven crystals to control the balance of magic in our world. We must not allow them to succeed. In order to ensure this, I will personally travel to seek out the elves and the dwarves to find the Earth Crystal and Thunder Crystal before they do.”

The listeners glanced at each other in surprise.
‘The elves and dwarves?’ thought Pike. ‘How does he know where to find them?’

“During this time, the Magic Academy will be closed until I have returned. You may return to your families or your military posts in preparation for this war. Even though it is highly unlikely that the orcs can gain access to Baijore, rest assured that the Air Crystal and Ice Crystal will be guarded by Elite Warlocks and Ascended Guardians. You are all now dismissed.”

With that, headmaster Synapsis stepped down from the platform and left through the door. The students dispersed into groups as the commotion ensued. Pike, Brashon, and Magenta gathered, discussing what they had just heard, like many others around them. Then a member of the faculty appeared next to them.

“Excuse me, you are Magenta of the Beginner Bard Class?” the man asked?
“Yes, I am Magenta.” She answered him.
“Headmaster Synapsis requests you to meet with him in the Dyluck Chamber. Please follow me.”

Pike and Brashon looked at each other in surprise. What could headmaster Synapsis want with Magenta at this time?
Magenta followed the man and went into the Dyluck Chamber. Pike and Brashon followed and waited outside in the halls. A while later, Magenta came back out again.

“What did the headmaster want to see you for Magenta?” asked Pike.
“He said that… he wants me to go with him… to help him find the elves…”
“What?” exclaimed Brashon. “How could YOU possibly help him find the elves?”
“I don’t know,” answered Magenta nervously. “But he said that the two of you can come to accompany me too.”
“Really? That’s great!” said Pike excitedly. “I’m coming with you for sure Magenta. The girl smiled at him.
“You’re coming too right Brashon?” asked Pike, looking at him.
“Of course,” answered Brashon. “How could I pass up this opportunity to travel with the great Synapsis? Besides, I must see just how Magenta is supposed to help find the elves…”

Chapter 5: Long Lost Elves

Synapsis appeared with a flash of light on the teleport field of the Water Palace where Pike, Magenta, and Brashon were waiting. They began their journey on horseback, heading westward with Synapsis in the lead. They rode continuously for half a day before they stopped by a river to eat something and refill their gourds, as well as give the horses a rest. Soon after, they were riding west once again and by the evening they had reached eastern most town and found an inn to stay for the night.

The next day, they continued west on foot, for they were nearing the rocky mountainous region where the horses would not be fit for use. Soon the ruins that were once the mighty dwarven kingdom came into view. Synapsis took a turn off the path to take a visit there, and the others followed.

They walked through the dusty rubble past crumbled buildings to the center of the city where a statue of the last dwarven king still stood. Syanpsis stopped, looking at the statue.
“Look at tall this rubble,” said Pike, looking out at the distance.
“A once mighty civilization,” said Syanpasis with eyes fixated on the statue and his back turned to the others. “Now has all but disappeared, all because of such irresponsibility…”
“Hmph. Those blasted orcs and their greed for power,” said Brashon, crossing his arms.
Synapsis did not reply or turn around.

After a while they left the dwarven ruins and continued their trek westwards. They made their way through the mountainous landscape and arrived at the mouth of a river by the evening. Making camp, the party ate some food and then slept.

The next morning they crossed the river and entered into the woods known as the Elven Forest. Synapsis led them through the forests and Pike was beginning to wonder if they were lost when they stopped at a clearing. Then Synapsis turned to Magenta.

“Magenta, use your flute and play your song,” he said to her.
“My song?” the girl blinked. Pike and Brashon looked at each other, wondering what was going on.
“Yes, the song that I heard you play at Durheim Castle. The song that you’ve known all your life.”
“Al…alright” the girl nodded and obeyed. Taking out her flute, she began to play her song. Pike wondered how Synapsis knew that Magenta knew the song her entire life when Synapsis took out a flute and began to play the same song, synchronized with her.
Pike and Brashon blinked in surprise as did Magenta, but she kept her concentration and continued to play her flute.

Then the ground began to shake and mist gathered around the clearing. Magenta ceased her tune when he saw Synapsis stop. The great mage stood still as the others began to look around in alarm, not knowing what was happening. Then the tremors stopped and the mist parted, revealing a new path in the forest, with a brightness coming from the end of the path. Syanpsis walked forward through the path and the others followed quickly.

They came out at the other end of the path to find a vast multitude of houses built in trees, under trees, on the trees, and all wrapped in beautiful plantations. Human looking, pointed ear creatures that were unmistakably elves walked around in their daily business and looked at the humans as they walked by. One elf standing near the entrance walked up to them. The elf looked at Synapsis, then Magenta, glanced at Pike and Brashon. Then eyes returned to Synapsis and the elf bowed.
“Welcome” the elf said “The elder has been waiting for you for a long time. Please come this way.”

They followed the elf, all the while their heads turning, gazing all around at the majestic scenery that was the home of the elves. The elf led them into a beautiful garden in the center of the city. He led them to where an elven woman sat in the garden with her eyes closed, seemingly meditating. The elf stopped, gesturing for the four to continue.
“That’s the elder?” Brashon whispered to Pike, “She doesn’t seem that old.”
“Shush, Brashon!” replied Pike with a finger to his lips.
“It’s alright,” the elven man answered. “She may not appear old, as most elves do not. But she is the eldest elf of our society and has cared for us for over four thousand years.”
“Wow!” replied Brashon, genuinely amazed.

Syanpsis continued onwards to meet the woman. The others followed close behind. The woman opened her eyes when she heard their footsteps. Her eyes gleamed with delight as she saw them and stood up.
“Synapsis!” she exclaimed with a smile, “Is it really you Synapsis? Come closer and let me see your face!” She reached out her arms and Synapsis stepped forward. With the faintest of smiles on his face, he leaned forward and let the woman take his face in her hands.

“By the gods, I can’t believe it! It’s really you!” she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around his neck, hugging him. “I thought I might never see you again! Do you still recognize me? I haven’t seen you in over 20 years! You were but a youth back then, but now you’ve grown to be a strong and fine looking man, very much like your grandfather was.” The elven woman ran her hands against his face again.

“Yes,” replied Syanpsis, still with only a tiny smile on his face. “It has been quite a long time, Kalypse.”

Chapter 6: Sibling Reunion

Kalypse?” Brashon said to Pike. “Isn’t that who the cafeteria is named after?”
Pike put a finger to his lips, gesturing for him to be quiet. Kalypse released Synapsis and peered over at the bunch standing behind him. Magenta caught her eye.
“Magenta!” the elven woman exclaimed as she came over to Magenta and hugged her. Magenta stood frozen in surprise, not knowing what to do and wondering who was this woman who knew her name. Kalypse pulled herself back and looked at the stunned girl.

“You don’t remember me?” asked Kalypse. Magenta shook her head.
“She was only but a few years of age when she last saw you Kalypse,” said Synapsis, coming closer. “She doesn’t even remember me. We got separated and I only found her a few months ago.”
Kalypse turned around and gasped, “What?”
Magenta blinked in surprise, “You knew me when I was a child Synapsis?”
“Yes, Magenta” he replied. “I am your brother.”
“What!?” exclaimed Pike and Brashon simultaneously in surprise.

Synapsis looked solemnly into the distance. “You and I are heirs of the Edina family. Our father was the great hero Adamon Edina, the son of Dyluck Edina.”
The other three who came with him stood with jaws hung open.
Synapsis continued, “We are half human, half elves. Our elven blood makes our appearance seem more youthful than we really are. You are over twenty years old already Magenta.”
Pike and Brashon glance at Magenta and then each other, and their eyes were filled with amazement and disbelief.

Synapsis went on, “Twenty years ago, during the War of the Races, our father Adamon went to the Lushroc Plains to fight the final battle against the orcs. You and I waited in the safety of the towns of men to await his return from battle. At this time Kalypse and the elves decided to move back into their homes in the Elven Forest and hide themselves from the rest of the world.”

He glanced at Kalypse and she nodded, picking up where he left off. “Only those with elven blood were allowed to come back into our elven homes. I invited you and your brother to join us in our return together to the forests, but your brother refused to come with us, insisting to wait for the return of your father, Adamon. I wanted to make sure that both of you and your father would be able to come find us someday, so I decided to teach you both a magical song that required both of you to play on your Twin Flutes in order to enter the Elven Forest. I’ve been waiting for you both ever since, wondering why you still haven’t come yet, but the rivers had told us of the death of Adamon along with many gods, and countless lives. Whatever happened?”

She turned to look at Synapsis. He replied with a bitter look on his face. “We waited for weeks in a small town for the return of our father. The battle at Lushroc plains lasted longer than we were told to expect, and I heard rumors that our father’s side was losing badly. Able men and boys who were still in the town gathered their gear and went off to help fight in the war. I wanted to go help father with my magic as well, but our caretakers would not let me go.”

He looked at Magenta. “Knowing that you would be in good hands, I took my staff and snuck out at night to head to the Lushroc Plains to look for father. After a grueling journey, I finally made it to the Lushroc Plains at the end of the battles. The fighting was already over and there were only bodies littered across the battlefield. There, I found father’s lifeless body on the ground.”

Synapsis paused and let out a silent breath. The room remained quiet. He continued speaking, almost painfully now it seemed. “When I came back to the town to find you Magenta, I found that the town had been left in ruins from an attack by orc raiders. Amongst the dead I found the body of our caretakers but I could find no sign of you. I searched and searched all the nearby towns but could not find you anywhere. I felt hopeless and was ready to give up. It was impossible for a single boy to search the entire world. I staggered everywhere, not knowing what to do. Then I heard people talking about the Magic Academy and an idea struck me. I thought if I could make myself well known as a great mage then you would hear of me and could find me someday. Using the money that father had left with me, I went to Baijore and enrolled into the Magic Academy. I soon made a name for myself with my impressive abilities and eventually became Headmaster of the Magic Academy and even the greatest mage in all the land. But still, you never showed up and still I had no clue of your whereabouts. So I made use of my resources as the Magic Academy Headmaster to comb the land looking for you. Finally someone told me of a girl named Magenta working at Durheim Castle.”

“I’m sorry but I don’t remember anything,” replied Magenta. “I was raised by foster parents who told me that they found me flowing down a river, with some scratches and a bump on my head. I think I must have hit my head, causing me to forget everything before, except for my name and this important melody.”
Synapsis nodded, understanding. Magenta looked down for a moment and back up at Synapsis. “But why did you not tell me all this right away when we first met?” she asked.

“When I finally found you, you didn’t remember me, and had a new life,” replied Synapsis. “You seemed so happy now that I didn’t want to tell you such a sad tale. So I decided not to tell you. But I wanted to see you still, so I decided to enroll you into the Magic Academy, knowing you had some magical abilities too. I wasn’t going to tell you all this but as fate would have it, we had to come find Kalypse and the elves, so I had no choice but to explain everything. I’m sorry for keeping this from you Magenta”

“No, please don’t say that,” replied Magenta. “I’m just glad that I finally know my past that I had never known, and that I still have a brother! I always had a strange warm feeling when you looked at me, as if we’ve known each other for a long time, and now I know why.” She wiped a small tear from the corner of her eye. “I… I’m just so glad to have finally found that I have a brother. I’m so happy to see you!”

Synapsis came closer and took the girl crying tears of joy in his arms. Kalypse beamed happily for them at their reunion, as did Pike and Brashon. Holding his little sister in his arms, the usually emotionless exterior of Synapsis had the warmest smile on his face that no one had ever seen before.
