Magic; Do you really need a Teacher?

Gentlemen and ladies, alas I have another question. :(

I've had some characters in the past that were very interested in the realm of magic, but always had to be taught by the Mage's Guild (or whatever it's called now) teachers specifically, and getting into that was a rarity all by itself.

So, I bring up this question: Do you really need a teacher to be a magician / mage / battlemage?

I'd love to know, because magic was always an interest I'd love to get a character interested in and RP'ing with.

Thanks!

Only teachers have the rune that allows to teach others runes. So yeah.

We are currently not taking applications. So no, he could not be a GM.

Well thank you, gentlemen and ladies.
