Magic resistance works. You simply complete too few actions to get any skill gain (the action in question is being hit by magic spells). It takes many (dozens+) actions to raise a skill. being hit three times is not going to get you any skill gain. I've explained this many times to you before and you seem to be the only person who does not understand the concept.
If the skill has even once appeared on your list then that means the skill itself gained 'experience' or else it would not have appeared at all
A quote from Nitram (a Dev) the last time you asked this question and wouldn't except the answer given
Nitram wrote:Well at 4 spells against you you learn like nothing. But if weaker magical monsters hit you, you will gain your skill. How ever I do not get what such a question has to do on the proposals board.
I will close that topic now since it lacks of any use.

I doubt a Dev is not going to log onto your character to gain a skill for you only because you are unable to find a method to make it rise.

And dying reduces your skill btw.
I think the best idea is to not even bother trying to raise your magic resistance unless you have high essence.

that can't be possible. flames aren't magic, they are more or less items(quality i.e. damage varies with the skill of the caster) created by magic, you will not gain any skill from standing in them or having them cast on you
