I wasn't sure if this thread should go into the newbies board, but I figured I'd post this here. Anyways, I'm new to this and thought I'd mention that I had some troubles cutting wood on the beginner's island since I went for the closest trees near the shoreline and no matter how many times I tried using my axe, it wouldn't allow me to do anything until I realized both...

1. I was standing in the "wrong position" for cutting the log. Since I went for the tree closet to the shoreline, I couldn't get the correct position in order to cut the log fully.

2. I apparently was supposed to be cutting down one of the apple trees anyways.

In the end, I was thinking to myself "wood is wood", so I was little dumbfounded when the NPC insisted I didn't have any, but there is a difference between the two and thought I'd just share that here since I could see future newbies repeat the same action and have trouble themselves. It took me a while to access the situation, but I managed to pull through. Maybe the few trees that are in that area could be switched out for apple ones?

Well for wood being wood your right if you making fire, but with different wood you canmake different stuff

Good to know, there's no denying different wood can be used for different things, but as far as being completely new the game and trying to get pass the stages of the newbie island, that's probably something that a new player like myself wouldn't automatically be able to figure out right away. It's more of a matter of being fresh new to everything and having a slightly difficult, brief period of time advancing a character into an actual town. At least that was the case here.

Your point is good and valid. We will try to fix that source of confusion.
