Illarion is listed at the Linux game database now.
http://www.lgdb.org/game/illarion
Voting or writing a review there would help to bring more players to Illarion, so you're welcome to do so :)

In the recent news it has two possible server downs. Maybe we should try to get that changed, because it doesn't look so hot.

That reads directly the news from the Illarion homepage by parsing the rss newsfeed. As soon as we get new news, this will be changed.

...because practice makes perfect.
That part of the description is still a huge invitation for everyone who prefers powergaming over roleplaying.
The type of players you attract, make the game.

How would you phrase the text? A new version (thx@Hadrian) can be found here: https://illarion.org/mediawiki/index.ph ... t_Illarion (internal link).

I prefer playing with 100 players who like to gain skills and develop a character over playing with myself . Building up a character is a vital part of Illarion and most MMORPGs. Deactivating the skill system is not an option.

Currently, we attract NO players. Given the present tendency over the last 2 month, we run out of players in about 1-2 month. This means: 0 new players and several players leaving.

So, every player we attract, no matter who, is a win.

I agree.

I don't care if they are powergamers or not. The skills take a long time to develop, so long in fact, that you can't help but develop your character through RP.

The "Skillgaining" may be "anti-RP" at first, but trust me......who wants to saw 3000 logs when it doesn't give skill anymore. Human nature is that the character will get bored, have a little fun with others (Learning RP), and enjoy it before returning to "Skill-Gaining". Over time, I think they will realize RP is as fun as getting that "New Item" to craft, and become better RP'ers.

Learning to Role-Play is a process, and even "Skill-Gainers" should be allowed time to develop. Besides, it's VERY Hard to RP a smith or Tailor if you can't actually make anything. Most people ignore you once they find out what your real skills are. Gaining Skill is as crucial to characters as "Good RP".

I wouldn't worry about it. Let's get players in here, get them involved, teach them RP as they play. :D

People like to play successful characters. If you let them skill up, it will pay off on their roleplaying side. Otherwise players get bored and will leave the game.

When I came here in 2005 I played for a bit but uninstalled the client up to 3 times with boredom because my friend wouldn't stop telling me that I couldn't train my character and had to roleplay 24/7. Eventually I escaped and enjoyed skilling, over which time I was enjoying the game how I wanted to enjoy it, while at the same time converting myself gradually to a roleplayer.

I hope this is interesting to read for you lot.

You're not attracting players cause there are things like WOW which are, even if dull, attracting a lot of players who prefer things like skilling, leveling, dungeon-raiding and colorful (i would say eye-hurting) graphics and a kinda childish atmosphere. The average MMORPG player around wants "simple" (but work-hungry) things like mounts, levels, PvP battles and to see what people are wearing.
If illarion focusses on attracting the same type of players who are attracted by huge commercial things featuring no real RP even on so-called RP-Servers, it's no wonder that illarion looses players because that type of player will always prefer such a commercial system to something like illarion, which gets laggy when 60 or 70 people are online.

You cannot beat a giant with a stick. But you can possibly sneak around it.
Illarion's community is unique. It's one of the game's strengths. I would even say, it's its main thing.
You did a great job improving the engine over the last years, and i'll be possibly starting to peek into the game a bit more when you start some of the really neat features the testserver already has.
But i'm not too likely to stay, if the next thing happening is some barely rped dwarf trying to provoke me into a fight, attacking me after going on my nerves for twenty minutes, and then complains to ten other people that he got himself killed by a "PK" or "Murderer", as which he adresses me afterwards, not even in a slight RP manner, possibly ending in him and some of his newbie friends reporting ME to a GM. That's really not what i consider a positive RP experience. ;)

I guess it's time to discuss this in the public - why Illa gets less new players and also loses old ones.

I see a lot of "N's" online, the other day saw four at the same time, these players don't stay, or are older ones leaving faster then new ones come?

While the first thing (why few people join) became pretty obvious, the latter (why most people leave so fast) is not - there were some attempts to answer this question:

http://illarion.org/community/forums/vi ... hp?t=25558
http://illarion.org/community/forums/vi ... hp?t=16001

Problem: Those who abandoned the game did not answer. The vast majority of those who could have become players of Illarion does not even know about these questionnaires about Illarion. So we can only guess.
