skill lost/frozen item?

earlier today I was making a red steel shield, I left to go eat dinner. When I returned I smelted ore then returned to making the shield only to find I wasn't skilled enough to finish it.
I then started working on an orc axe(not sure why but it looked interesting) and got it up to 80% and got a skill gain putting me back at the level I needed to smith the red steel shield.
I did not attempt to finish the shield instead I continued my work on the axe. The axe however seems to be frozen at 80%. I have gotten no fail messages, the resources for making the axe aren't being lost, and the anvil image keeps the heated piece of steel even when I walk away...
I get a message saying I continued the work everytime I use the hammer with the axe, but nothing is being done. If I move I don't get a message saying I interupted my work, and I can't seem to smith anything else(hammer just doesn't want to work) since the skill up that put me back at the skill level I was at before leaving earlier. Help please...
