Very New to this game

Hi, I am very new to this game and very confused. I have looked at some of the other newbie threads, but they all seem to be about topics more advanced than where I'm at. Also I have read the manual but I still have a lot of unanswered questions.
1. It seems that many people on the English client speak Deutsch, is this normal? I have heard that English is the new language and Deutsch the old. Is my starting character proficient in both in game, or do I need ti pick it up as a skill?
2. How do I open doors, if they are closed does that mean they are automatically locked?
3. How do I tell NPC's from players who may be logged in, but not active?
4. Is there a list of commands that I must put in the prompt to be able to speak to a merchant?
5. I see animals that are unattended, are they someone's property or can they be killed for food?
6. I walked to Greenbriar from Trollsbane and then around some mountains to the south, but saw very little activity. Where should new players go if they want to get oriented with the world?
7. Can I put food in any open slot, or just the ones that started with food?
8. How does one acquire a skill that they don't have?
9. Is it possible to get forms of transportation in this game like a horse?
Well thats the questions I have for now at least, I'd like to say thank you to anyone who takes the time to respond.

The client isn't separated by languages whatsoever, to allow more "multi-lingual" roleplay attempts. No skill is needed ingame for your character to know it, as long as you the player knows both of them. ^_^
2. How do I open doors, if they are closed does that mean they are automatically locked?
Usually, you can step right up to a door and shift+click them. Or right click + "Use". If they're locked, you'll get a message saying such.
3. How do I tell NPC's from players who may be logged in, but not active?
When you're logged in, hit F12. That way, all Player characters will have "Someone(#######)" above their heads.
4. Is there a list of commands that I must put in the prompt to be able to speak to a merchant?
Walk up to an NPC and say the word "Help". You'll get a list of commands. ^^
5. I see animals that are unattended, are they someone's property or can they be killed for food?
Really depends on where you are. Most unattended animals can be killed, though if they can not, it may be a fun scene to find out ingame. *g*
6. I walked to Greenbriar from Trollsbane and then around some mountains to the south, but saw very little activity. Where should new players go if they want to get oriented with the world?
Uh.. This is always an unpredictable side of the game. Troll's Bane is usually the most active place on the map. I say usually, as sometimes you can log in and everyone is spread out far and wide. You may just have to wander at first, one of the very few setbacks of such a large playing map.
7. Can I put food in any open slot, or just the ones that started with food?
They can go into pretty much any slot in your belt, bag and hands.
8. How does one acquire a skill that they don't have?
Skills are acquired over time, I guess.. The first time you try something new like fighting, carpentry, so on and so forth, that usually will allow you to get the skill.
9. Is it possible to get forms of transportation in this game like a horse?
Pretty much the only transportation is walking, "Journey Books" which cost a silver coin, or the pillars of the transporters you'll find in any big town that cost 30 coppers to use.

There is just one client for players who speak either language, the terms "Old" and "New" language are for roleplaying purposes. Your character speaks 'Common' and whatever racial language fits. Technically, if you are multilingual yourself, you can speak in both English and German.
2. How do I open doors, if they are closed does that mean they are automatically locked?
Most doors are unlocked, however some special ones are locked. To open a door (or try to), press "shift" and click the door while pressing it, then release the click.

3. How do I tell NPC's from players who may be logged in, but not active?
Usually, players have numbers over their heads, whereas NPCs do not.
4. Is there a list of commands that I must put in the prompt to be able to speak to a merchant?
Yup! I'm sure if you ask the merchants for 'help', you might get to see some of the commands :)
5. I see animals that are unattended, are they someone's property or can they be killed for food?
Depends on where you are, the pigs in Trollsbane (beginning town) are free for anyone to slaughter for food/supplies, whereas in Vanima, killing animals is illegal.
6. I walked to Greenbriar from Trollsbane and then around some mountains to the south, but saw very little activity. Where should new players go if they want to get oriented with the world?
Sticking around Trollsbane usually is good. If it's a good time, there are plenty online.

7. Can I put food in any open slot, or just the ones that started with food?
Any unoccupied slot will work for anything (That your character can hold without trouble)
8. How does one acquire a skill that they don't have?
By attempting to use said skill. For example, to get carpentry, try to make something out of wooden logs on a carpentry bench.
9. Is it possible to get forms of transportation in this game like a horse?
Well thats the questions I have for now at least, I'd like to say thank you to anyone who takes the time to respond.
There is teleporters currently that help with that.

Good luck Ingame! Hope to meet you eventually!
