Account System

We're getting a few new players recently... so here's my idea for an automated system, which MIGHT filter out (or at least consolidate) n00bs.

I) The Player creates an account by entering his email address and stuff
II) The account is created, but before he can do anything, he has to 'unlock' the account.
III) Unlocking the account requires that the player answer 5 questions (like we currently have), however since its tied to an email address account, the tries may be traced.

If he fails the first test, he may not try the test again until 5 minutes, then 50 minutes, then 1 day, a week and then the account is locked and he is banned.

Obviously each time he fails, he will be given a link to the rules page.

The only way around the timer is if the player makes a new account ect.. but the Ip can be traced ect.. and if its taking him sooo much effort to create a new email address ect... then I think it'd be easier for him to read the rules.

IV) Humans are the easiest race to roleplay, since they're various... so for the time being, the only race the player can create, is a human

V) If the player wants to try a new race, there is a small test which is about BASIC racial lore, for example:

Lizards: 1) Which is the god/goddess followed by almost all Lizards?
2) Which of the following would be a good name for a lizard?
3) What is their diet composed mostly of?
4) Which letter is usually slurred in the lizard version of common?

ect...

VI) If the player fails the test, s/he will be linked to the racial lore page, and isn't allowed to create that character until 3 days have passed.

VII) The test questions for the racial test are always the same, they don't need to be randomised...

VIII) After a set time (one month?) of CONSTANT use of the account (no logging in once and leaving it to ferment), the player will have access to all races...

---

Maybe as well because the server does not send the e-mails really good. There are still problems with this.

Nearly exactly like this the new version of the account system will work. But i selected slightly different times ;)

Wouldn't it be better / easier / faster to select all races but humans as special races? Like the fairies, gnomes and goblins.

Further more i think about lowering the character limit of the accounts. 2 is a good number i think. Because who playes more then 2 characters really active?

But thats nothing that is in set currently... just a thougth. To make our players playing the characters a little more constant.

2 who are really active, yes...

But I still 'need' to log in with others every now and then.
Also, since my chars seem to often get captured/kidnapped and so on, I would need others too.

Please no

Making all races except humans special races will result in 90% human characters, a loss of players that want to play an elf but cannot be bothered to write a long story and everybody running around with the same two avatars... So:

Please no :?

So i wonder why the two UO RP Shards i played ( Alathair, Siebenwind ) do not allow any characters but humans without special apply and run pretty well with that.

It can make the game more interesting with every now and then using another character, it's more fun this way.

Why do we have to look at others and remove something we've got better?

I don't think its better as we handle it. Playing races but human is more difficult. And the most new players come in the game and choose elves because they sound cool. Dunno, but i think thats a reason why all elves are in GB and not in Vanima. Because they give a smile on the background of the elves.

Because they have paperdolls and not every human looks like every other human?

i love the idea that all races except humans are special races. actually it is so that the most elf e.g. are played like humans with sharp ears. Maybe it could be make so, that not all special races are very hard to get. So could be the announcement for a halfling to answer just 3 or 4 little questions, but the announcement for a elf to write a longer story and answer some questions.

To the number of character limit of the accounts, i think two is a little bit less. Sure today where i have my training i haven't the time for more than 2 Chars (to be serious i think i should better play only 1 char), but i remember times when i was a bit younger, i played, especially in holidays, 3 chars real active. So i would say the character limit should be at least 3 per account.

edit:

You doesn't mean that real, or? Illarion is a role playing game, not a fashion show simulation. It doesn't care much how the graphic looks, to describe your char we have #me's and the F-keys.

I don't know what you mean by "real active" but I play three on a regular basis.......... and one other occasionally, the fifth rarely but is a RP char only and I have a great time when playing. I hope this does not come into effect. I have seen and played other games....some, the graphic better, some the movement easier (such as being able to use the mouse to walk), or ride a horse, sit in a chair etc., but there are lots of advantages to Illa that outweigh some of these. The RPing atmosphere, the sense of "community", friends, and being allowed to have more the two chars are just a few.

As far as the races, IMO for a certain time active IG, playing a human for the new PO would be helpful....possibly tied into newby island

This I can sighn up. I play really in the same way as POJuliana and agree with her.
Let write stories for other races after let say 2 months, but don't reduce the Characters per account :?

that would be a pity.
without taking notes, i think that i play each of my five chars at least one ore two hours a week.

every race save human as special race - sounds like a sound idea to me.

I disagree. I think to play a human requires just as much background knowledge as an elf, a dwarf, a halfling.

Everyone will play a human.

I say do that, but after x amount of time let them play the races without application. e.g. someone who's played for a year, or even 6 months, is going to know how other races act.

I don't think we ought to assume that every new player is a gibbering idiot.

Besides, what are we going to do with all the poorly played humans?

Those who can't even play a human have to learn it. Or they run around "How do u kill?" and "How do u mine 4 fish?". Then we have Arien ;)

I have two active characters, one character which I'm storing until he can find a magic tutor, and one character which I use for 'quests'..

that's 4 characters..

Should a character ever be 'stored' though?

He has two runes and a book of the ancient language...

There's no real reason to delete him...it'd be a waste.

If you do not play him regularly, then there is no reason to keep him, surely?
