I've noticed a lot of Americanism in illarion,

There is no gammon, but ham.
You buy armor, not armour.

Etc. etc.

I just read the TB guard board and saw someone correct an English spelling of a word to an American one.

Surely in medieval periods, they'd use the English spellings?

The characters 'hear' the words, they don't see them, so does it really matter?

I'm glad I don't have to play a fighter either, or I might have to type *shudders* "armor".

The game is FANTASY, not MEDIEVAL themed.

It is always good to use sone shakespeare-sounding sentences, but old english isn't understandeable by kinda most of us. As is old german.

And to be serious, this post is absolutely ridiculous from a player who writes things like "screw you" ingame...

Is spelling really a big deal on posts?

I kind of think of it as a reflection of the post itself... you know...

A post with little punctuation and a number of grammatical/spelling errors, is a piece of crinkled parchment written in a rough, agitated hand, whereas a post that generally obeys the rules of spelling and grammer is a written in a more stable, perhaps (if it seems come from an educated point of view)flowing, script.

And when you think of it that way small changes such as armour-armor, colour-color don't really make a difference, and dialect specific word usage reflects the background of the characters themselves.

It's when people try to demean each other by correcting spelling errors that things become an issue. And really, if the only argument a person can come up with is your spelling, or they purposefully choose to stoop to the level of arguing grammar in place of ideas, are they really worth beating a dead horse over?
(And we all know which thread I'm talking about, don't we? )

I admit, in my first days, i tried for half an hour to buy 'half leather armour'. I think this shows how confusing it can be for an english newcomer, althought admitedly it was a little stupid.

Alex, you must always keep in mind... this game is a parody! If you mention anything about medieval you'll get someone saying it's not it's a fantasy world completely separate and characters can have laptops if they want. No-one will ever agree.

I say ham too. Gammon is a particular type of ham. But really, I draw the line at 'color'.

In old english I think people sometimes said "dye" instead of "die"...think of the confusion that would cause!


First - It was dumb to correct the spelling of it, second I've seen both spellings, most people don't care which, it really isnt a big deal

this is stupid.... just look at the names of the items ham is titled ham, and any armor that has armor in the name is titled with "armor"

I personally have let some of the British English slip into my spelling when it comes to spelling armour occasionally. I don't see anything wrong with it, it means the same thing just with a different spelling. It is like grey and gray, same word, same meaning, just another way to spell it.

And yeah, arguing over an ic post when it comes to spelling is just fing stupid. I don't expect any persons spelling to be perfect on the rp boards unless they are doing a rp post. I actually expect people to have spelling mistakes because it makes sence for their character to not have perfect spelling. They aren't scholars, nor are most characters supposed to be that well learned so to speak. I don't know, it just makes sence to me.

@ Aegohl: I agree. The 4th of July is nice. A day off and quite a few firework displays. Something worth looking forward to.

It's quite simple why, really. There are more American than English players, so we get our english implemented. Seems fair to me.

4th of July is lame. I preferred it when the English owned most of the world. Those were the days.
