There was a Dwarf talking to Borgate, in dwarven, and I saw some things like [Dwa} *****r****s*******k**** Does this mean that I've learned a little of the dwarven language learned?

Nope.

then why is it happening?

You're simply not able to speak this language so you don't understand it -> no words/ *

no, I'm not talking about the **** I'm talking about the random letters that appear in it '[Dwa] ****r****s*****w***

Right. If you don't have a language in your language skills, you cannot learn it, zip zero nada. You have to gain that 1st skill point to be able to learn it. You cannot learn it from out of the blue, you can understand random letters though.

So there is a possibility to learn other languages, if you have the first skill point?

You get a book, that you read, and that gives you the first skill point.
Next, whenever you talk that language, you get some skills..
You can ALWAYS understand some random letters, even if you have 0 skills in that language. It's just like that. Random.

Where do you get books to learn new languages? There certainly aren't any in the library....

Posted: Sun Jul 08, 2007 2:26 pm
by Pellandria
There are no more Books for new languages..

So, it's impossible to learn any languages other than the ones your character starts with? That seems a little odd...

I believe, you can get the books for new languages from mage teachers.

Yes, but only for ancient.

That's wierd. Why aren't there anymore language books? Surely other people would like to be able to expand their ability to comprehend other races.

The book of ancient language is still around, but it needs to be 'signed' by a person who knows Ancient before it can be used

Propably the reduce of the ability to learn other languages is, that the system of race languages was at the way to get destroyed by this?

What would be the benefit for elves, to use their own language, if all humans and orcs and also dwarves could understand them?

/agreed

If everyone could learn every language we could better cut out all the languages and only hold common, same effect <.<

IMHO ((and, almost, not meant to be, especially, rude))

Concerning, especially, a problem of a SMALL part of the elven community.

->One learns by listening to an (almost) unknown language.

->If something is to be planned not to be understood by all listeners, it could additionally be whispered.

->If every -stroll-from-here-to-there-elf- must shout out all the secrets of shaping the words, so shall it be.

->Attempting to play a spy-like (not-human) char gets nearly impossible,
if even the -teenage-retired-one-copper-sl  t- is not able to understand a single word of the human language.

Most offensive polite.

That is what happened when the possibility was open to learn elven language via NPC. Indeed.

Um... Just wondering if I could get some advice.

When you are learning a language (& have that first skill point) what is the best way to go about it? 'Cause my character spent an hour (no lie) trying to tell a story in ancient and didn't swirly once.
Should I try short/long sentences/short/long words, or does that matter at all? It just seems a little odd to me that for every other skill you can get your first two or three swirlies in an hour but for language it takes forever.

PS: Yes, her int is relatively high.

I suppose that "bump" was the wrong word...
Perhaps "Please respond anyone?" would be better.

Skillgain in languages takes years, there is no way tospeed it up, but try shorter languages as it seems it counts the sentences not the length of it.

years?
How do any of the mages learn it then?

talk ancient whenever you can.

.. The book gives 60% skill, you only need 70% skill. It's easy to get, if you spend time with other people who also speak ancient you can learn that in a day.

Like the warriors do,
Powergame. Duh.

60% skill? What colour is that supposed to be exactly? 'Cause right now my ancient is blue... very very blue...

Dude, the book has 4 pages. You read it once for the 1% skill, then again for 15% skill, then you go off and rp for an hour and read page 2 to get to 30% skill, then rp for an hour and read page 3 for 45% then go off for an hour and read page 4 for 60% skill. Then get the last 10 yourself. Or if you don't have time to sit around ig all day, you can log out and come back in four hours and read the next page.
