Why is it that when you use pins and cotters for creating the final product of the orc axe that the pins and cotters are used up but the axe is not completed? I have used up over 20 pins and cotters on one such axe with it still remaining unchanged. And my it is not that my character's work has failed. There is no work fails message. Can somebody look into this? Thank you kindly.

I haven't tried an orc axe, maybe its a bug, all the other tools and axes I have made worked fine.

What are pins and cotters? Are they just what used to be called nails?

Pins and cotters are a mix of nails and a new carpentry item that is some kind of wooden fastener, I think. I'm not sure what they're used for, but it seems to be smithing related. I think a carpenter has to make them, but I'm 100% certain on that.

Yes carpenter makes them, it is a mix of nails and wooden fasteners, and it is used to connect the axe/tool heads to the handle (I mean, since you use it to "finish" an item, I suspect thats what its for)

I don't know how to do that. If you like, you can put it in there.
