wouldn't it be a good idea, to charge toll for entering a walled town?
as was usual in medieval times?
tecnically it could be realised with the same script, that is used for teleporters.

Was it usual?

And what if I just stepped out then wanted to go back again, maybe forgot something? Would I have to pay again?

Can you elaborate the use of such a feature for the game?

If a town really wants to charge visitors, I guess there might be a way. But how comes I assume that such towns become deserted quite soon?

Taeryon wouldn't even be able to enter a singel town then, since he has nothing but what he wears and 14 coppers.

Estralis,

well, it would be simple.
a closed door inside a gatehouse. on the field in front of the door a teleporter (without any special graphics)
entering the char has to say "enter" or something similar, gets charged the fee.
he will be teleported on the other side of the door.
leaving town the same, just without fee.

i don't think, that a town, that charges would be deserted necessarily.
that would depend in great part on the amount of fee to be paid.

we are entering times of specialisation. a town, that offers something, others do not have, would be visited anyhow.

Boo hoo, poor Taeryon.

With "use" I meant "Nutzen" - the benefit for the game, not how it might work. Restricting certain areas, like an academy where one can learn something, might be a good idea. But whole towns...?

This would probably get frustrating to some players, if they had to pay every time they wanted to go into town. What if there was an attack or something? *screaming mob lines up at the toll booth* ;)

How about...a night toll? A lot of towns would have closed their doors after a certain hour, and opened them the next morning. This was done to prevent unwanted visitors that usually liked to sneak in when no one was looking, such as thieves ;)

So everyone at a certain GMT gets screwed over? I can only get online at times when it's night on illarion.

Please also remember that in Troll's Bane, the farmland is outside of town. It would be a real hardship for a farmer to have to pay a toll each time to re-enter town to put away the crops.

If a settlement really wants this they should have to do it manually.

I understand what I say probably isn't ever popular, but seriously... things that should be roleplayed between players shouldn't just have a script or feature thrown at them.

Cawdor,

not even TB would be able to put up enough manpower, to guarantee a continuous ((24hour)) gatewatch.

Then they can't collect money 24h.

There are things the players have to manage on their own. Gate tax is included.
