Suggestion: Alchemist

I KNOW that the Devs have a bit more to do then program an entirely new crafter class; but I'm goign to post this anyway, just incase they wish to consider it for the future.

Basically, the Alchemist is a crafter who mixes items, producing gunpowder; and from this gunpowder; many objects which can be used in many different ways.

=

Tools Used: Grinder (Large Object)
Chemical Bag (Small object)

=

The base attribute for the alchemist is intelligence; however, perception can be used in order to avoid small mishaps which may happen from time to time.

Its a dangerous job, and; if the alchemist fails producing something, there is a 10% base chance (perception lowers it), for an explosion to take place.
=
Items Created (Examples):

Black Powder [Gunpowder]
This is one of the most frequently required Material for his works

Requires: Grinder + Chemical Bag + Sulfer (Obtained [new item] from mining) + Coal

Use: Used as a raw material for furthur items
-
Fuse

Requires: Parchment + Chemical Bag

Use: Used as a raw material for furthur items
-
Smoke Bomb

Requires: Black Powder + Fuse

Use: Creates a cloud of smoke when used which makes it hard to see, and hard to breathe in an area [Less chance of attack]
-
Explosive Bomb

Requires: Black Powder + Fuse + Water (and chemical Bag)

Use: Does area of effect damage when thrown
-
Shrapnel Bomb

Requires: Black Powder + Fuse + Iron Ingot

Use: Does more area of effect damage then the bomb above, propells broken pieces of iron at bystandars
-
Flash Bomb

Requires: Black Powder + Fuse (Chemical Bag)

Use: Creates a massive flash of light with sound which can be used as a distraction, or to blind opponents
-
Alchemist's Matches

Requires: Black Powder + Logs

Use: Used in order to start fires quickly, to ingite gunpowder, to try to set fire to crops... the list is endless
-
Explosive Arrows

Requires: Black Powder + Arrows

Use: Deals more damage then a standard arrow
-
Rocket

Requires: Wooden Tube (Has to be made by carpenters) + Black Poweder + Fuse

Use: A rocket in one hand; a match in another; can be fired ONCE upon a target, does a decent amoutn of damage; and also stars fires
-
Treated Iron

Requires: Weapon + Chemical Bag

Use: Treats the Weapon with special chemicals which (are supposed to) make it harder and better to wield; may also damage it in the process.

=

Those are a few of the ideas I have...

Comments? Suggestions (apart from scrap it... :P)?

To those who are experts in making home-made gunpowder, i KNOW that its much harder than that, and that a grinder would take you 48 hours or so to get a decent quality. Plus the chemical bag is there so I don't have to go into Chemistry Lessons :P

or we could just add those things to the current alchemy skill maybe?

Seriously; hire adrian as concept manager.

As much as I hate to admit it, these are some good ideas. How about something to help prevent damage to weapons/armour too?

Seriously, first: Illarion is no damnit war-game and second: bombs would make alchemists unbeatable. Also, the gms are allready planning to add some things, like the smoke bomb or a explosive potion to the current druidism system.

AND an alchemist is someone, who tries to make worthy metals out of non worthy, for example the try to make gold out of copper or something. Also, they where/are searching for the philosopher's stone and did a lot of other chemical work, but no alchemist was a bomb-maker, seriously. What is the next thing you want to add to illarion? An atome-bomb?

Bzzt! Wrong answer.

Alchemy. Chemistry. You see those two words? Close, aren't they? Alchemists worked with all sorts of materials. I'm sure that in their quest to make gold they'd discover other useful substances anyway.

I didn't say an alchemist is a chemist (?), did I ?. I just used "made some chemical works" because the things, I'd really like to explain are too hard to say for me in english, much too hard :P

you can't say bombs are unbeatable, it all depends on the numbers. the programmers decide how powerful they are.

and you could say the same thing about swords, " what, combat in illarion?!? what's next, military comanders!!!"

Actually... you're *both* right.

Their main function was to try and accomplish things like the infamous 'lead into gold'.

But along the way they did discover some amazing things.

That's trash, commanders aren't uber-weapons, are they? And when you throw a sword, it can't blow up a building or kill a group of people.

Edit: that was the answer to the post two posts ago

Edit2.

Yeah but they set one person on fire I think, they don't blow up anyone.
AND you can only get them from a gm, because they are not makable I think.

I don't think anyone's talking about bombs like we have in modern-day. I think we're talking about chemicals-in-a-bottle kind of like the molotov cocktail we already have. My impression on reading the descriptions of the "bombs" were that they were meant to counter-balance mages. I think people are just freaking out because of the word "bombs". Personally, I kind of like the idea.

Eee, wrong.
They have AOE damage of I think 5 tiles by 5 tiles.
And makable I don't know, perhaps with verry high alchemy.

And I have to agree with Devrah here to.

And remember, they won't be the (sorta) precise bombs we have today. There could be a chance of messing up when throwing it, possibly based on dexterity.

In my oppinion, bombs are ok, as long as they don't blow up anything. light-bombs, fire making bombs or smoke-bombs would be ok, but I'd hate to see anyone running around, throwing kinda granades around or something AND I think that thoose things should be added to the druid-part of the alchemy

Bombs wont be *that* strong man, our bombs can blow up buildings with ease, but the bombs we mean are smaller ones.

Black powder isn't like today's bombs.

Even today, black powder made using MODERN machinary isn't used to blow things up, just to propell things like bullets or so.

You're not going to blow a hole in the place with the bomb IG, just do some damage.

oh and chinese ALCHEMISTS discovered gunpowder... by accident true.

By the time the mongolians attacked china, the chinese had rockets, flaming arrows, and kites with fuses on them...

Alchemy litterally is trying to convert something to gold. Except it was probobly lost in translation to this game, notice how theres nothing but chemical processes ig for that skill. It is chemistry, but they wanted a less modern word for it. They already had clay grenades by this time anyway. Eplosive item we have now already has damage dependant on quality, so you'd need high skill to make strong items.

As far as gun powder goes-potassium nitrate, charcoal dust, sulfer. I think salt peter and sulfer you could find in coal mines. I figure we could use wood ashes or just wood logs for the charcoal. I don't see why we need to use anymore than the mortor and pestle we have now. Theres no logic in a magical "bag" of sorts, or large grinding, when producing on a small scale.

I think parchment + black powder would be the most effective fuse.

A simple real life smoke bomb can be made from a mixture of salt peter (potassium nitrate) and sugar, honey would work I think. Salt peter + honeycomb+fuse.

I don't know that a high explosive is possible with this tech level, certainly a clay grenade like item is possible, or maybe just a glass bottle would work.

I think it's a somewhat good idea...just needs to be toned down a bit.

Oh, and people still practice alchemy...like it's a form of magickal chemistry. Do a google search, and you should find something other than Fullmetal Alchemist....real alchemy is what you'll find.

Sorry for ressurecting old posts but just to let you know i love these ideas.

Especially the matches idea, if it made an automatic flame anywhere.

A concept i'd like to add is a potion which creates light, lets say it reacts with metal or something and would clear fog away and temporarily boost perception

I hate the bomb idea.. Potion that creates light? Candle..? :P

I really do not want to discourage anyone. But the fact is that we have tons of concepts it our magic depot. What we really need are people to implement such things in lua. After the current reworking of the crafting system (it will be great, I promise) we will most likely implement something completely new which has been put off far too long, I think. Right Aragon? ;)
