GMs/Names

A GM recently stopped me in-game because apparently my name wasn;t very medieval or wasn't suited for a halfling. For the fact no-one else in the whole game had commented on it, I was surprised, and not least angry when they asked me to change it. The name was Ritro. I can't see anything wrong with that, nor my old char they commented on (Obach). The only one they didn;t comment on was Chiron, which I found the least medieval.
They never explanied exactly what was wrong either.

I can see a problem with the name Ritro (reminds me of Retro) and Obach (which is almost an old german word which isn't used anymore -> Obacht). Well...dunno though...

What I do when I make names is take random letters from the alphabet and stick them together...it works.

So a name isn't good just because it resembles a common word? Ritro/Retro why does it matter? One could go through all the current names and make some type of comment for modern words that MIGHT be kind of close or sound similar

On topic: The name sounds fine to me, though it is dependent on opinion.

I don't know if it was the reason Foos. I'm no GM as you know. I just said what I personally think about it.

Neither name is medieval.
Now that I've pointed that out, there are many, many characters already ingame whose names aren't very medieval. I guess if the reason behind the name is that important to you you could ask the GM for further clarification.

How do you define Medieval though? There are various cultures within humans IG. Not to mention races that have absolutely nothing to do with medieval time.

As far as I've been led to understand, names should match the backgrounds/examples given on Moonsilver for the non-human races, and human names are supposed to fit into the cultures described or be acceptable as medieval names in our own world history.
I could be wrong, I'm just saying that's how I understood it.
I guess the way it's actually handled though, is that names are accepted or declined based on whether they disrupt the game for other players. It would be disruptive, for example, to have a "Catherine Zeta Jones" ingame, I think

As to why these particular names were declined, again, only the GM who asked him to change his names knows.

That's the problem, though. If I made everyone change names that I didn't personally like when I was a GM, well, first of all a lot of people would be changing names and second of all I'd be a bad GM.
Stop harassing the poor kid, jeez. Let him play.

Good, fitting names. Evil GM.
Obach is a surname in germany - maybe that was the cause.

hm,
I wouldn't mind that name either.
But Google is your friend. ^^

Maybe it has something to do with this.

Only when I pronounce it

I pronounce Aristeaus it as if it were some Roman or Greek name, because of the 'eaus' that is popular with their older culture and gods, etc.

And Chiron is even from Age of Mythology, leader of the Centaurs.

Chiron is from the ancient greek mitology. He was supposed to be Achile's teacher
