There is a certain downfall with the romours posted in this topic.
I am open to suggestions how to fight this.

I suggest we lock the thread for normal accounts and change it back to only be available for the mods.

PS: There has been several reminder been posted about how to keep this topic, but as it seems it doesn't work out properly.

And those smaller rumors who are only of use to a few and simply something to have a laugh about to the rest?

Why do you feel the rumors have gone downhill? I think they are quite appropriate now actually. There is a mix of serious rumors and ridiculous rumors. That is the way a rumor works.
So if you would give your reasoning to say you feel now the rumor thread must be locked, I would appreciate it.

Currently some peoples use the rumour board to write something that damages any other chars reputation. without them ever having played out how they spread ingame the rumour under the peoples. They just use that board to do as if they really went ingame and made peoples talking about it

How are you aware of that at all patric?

I'd be very sad if that "rumors go downhill" counts for the dwarven rumors...

Let me say a few words.
People, rumors can actualy be started 'because' on char doesn't like another.
It's just the way things word.
Let's take the last two rumors.
The two with Stephen and Meriel.

You hear strange rumors about the archmage aiding the blackstone cult now to fight a warrior of malachin.

You hear rumours about that Stephen Rothman still claiming to be a warrior of Malachín, after all the unhonourable things he has done. Word is, that he has actually been deceived by Nargun from the very beginning.

If you ask me, the first rumor is a usual one, just as any.

But the second one seems to me as an attack at the first one, and the one who posted it.

This is a game, it's supposed to be fun.
Once again, our characters are not us.
My char may hate some char, but I could be the bestest of friends with the PO.

People, don't take everything as an insult that fast. Not everything that is against some char is true, an insult, trying to ruin the char by ooc.
Stuff like that.

You all know what I mean, even if I don't have the time right now to write it all out in a long post.

Well, it *could* be true. But as Sam said, how do you know that? You don't, you simply rely on what you *think* is true.
And so what? There can be plenty of people who saw it and any one of those could've told another. And if the other decides not to tell and the first shuts up about it, it's no rumor. But the one who spread it doesn't know that.

I haven't read them lately, but the only problem I have is the fighting. someone insult a warrior, so they defend theirselves:


you hear grant ran away from an orc crying

you also hear he just got some dust in his eye

you also hear that can't be true because there was no dust around.

you hear the orc's gay

It's been Grant recently, he does it alot.

I just like adding silly ones in to break up the whole bitching using rumors.

Indeed, it actually was. But the first rumour was an 'attacking' as well. So why not defending? When people can say one thing, they can also say another.

My rumours used to be pretty fine. Today I got a tad annoyed by it.

I still say it should be only available for mods. So those things doesn't happen.

Eh, I never take anything said in the rumors thread seriously.

I've even posted a couple that were derogatory to my own chars (such as 'you hear some of those in power in Varshikar are really Negros's pawns' or however I phrased it.)

The biggest problem I've seen, like Kevin, is that people take the rumors WAY too seriously, then make 'denial' or contrary rumors. That's just silly, really. They are RUMORS. Period. There is NO saying whether everything or even anything within them is true or complete BS.

Honestly, I think the one you posted sounds alot more attacking. Sam's one is plain if you ask me, just because it may involve bad things about Meriel doesn't mean it's an attack to her directly

I want to hear suggestions to improve the quality of this topic.
So far we have:

1) Lock topic, only Mods will post rumours.
2) Delete every unfitting rumour (criterias are still to be found)

I say: Delete unfitting ones.
Only granting mods the power to post rumors will likely result in only a few rumors, and the smaller rumors as I stated before won't spread.

Well, those who are recognised to take them to seriously and then start flaming should be banned from rumours. Is that possible?

With a php forum like this all is possible, but it would likely just result in people flaming in other threads about it. And people shouting 'GM abuse!'.

the "unfitting" rumors should be deleted.
but the moderators should fine tune this.
rumors are a good way, to warn somebody about what is going to hit him in future.

People post stupid rumours. It's been happening since it was open to players. As much as I enjoyed it in the past, if players keep treating it as they do, players should lose access to the topic.

I enjoyed the comical rumours. Maybe there could be a small amount of them, but if they have to be stopped, nevermind.

To add to Jen Jen's idea, I think that there should be a "rumours rpg" account. That is to say, only the mods will be able to post in the rumours section, however, everyone will be able to put in for submission rumours as often as they like by PMing said account with the possible rumour.

This is good for 2 reasons.
First, the rumours are deemed to be fit before being posted openly, assuring that all rumours to surface are not flaming, or counter-arguments, but simply rumours.
Second, people may finally learn what is a "good" rumour, and what is unacceptable. Maybe after a time the thread can be opened to everyone once more. -Once the mods decide that 99% (yes, random statistic) of the rumours being submitted are "postable".

So again, we can all make rumours, but the ones that are posted have been screened, saving us time and energy when reading through the forums.

Edit: Usually Liles' rumours make me grin, he should be allowed to keep posting. >.>

My suggestion is: 3 warnings, then the GMs give that person a massive talking to.. banning him if necessary afterwards.

Some people seem to assume the Mods are the ideal roleplayers and as such won't post ridiculously detailed rumors as they have in the past. Honestly, the rumor thread is something I skim through, not something I take seriously, becuase I and many other make it a habit to post at least 3 ridiculous rumors that could be true but really aren't, just to make those who take rumors as fact because they are a good way to get your character credit or whatever seriously.

Anyways, no, my latest rumor wasn't an attack on anything, it was something Stephen heard and Samantha did in the middle of town in the name of Galthran. So how is that possibly an attack on the po/character?

Should you be allowed to post rumours concerning your own character?
e.g.: Reputation boosting rumours
'I killed big dragon tonight! Praise me!'

Should you be allowed to post slandering rumours concerning another character?
e.g.: 'Stephen Rothmen sleeps with pigs!'

Should you always state some sort of source?
e.g.: You heard Keikan speak about the fairies in the Tavern, he thinks they are all females.

uggg. there is nothing wrong with the rumors. think about it in real life. i would guess 80% of rumors are false, why should it be any diferent here. people spread gossip because it is fun, stories get twisted and made false even if they start out true. stop whining that illarion is like rl. THATS THE BLOODY POINT!
