Glimmering in the fading, dying firelight, the jewels in the ring winked a deep bood-red, beckoning. Seducing. Begging to be taken by trained fingers. She was no one to deny them.
From her hiding spot in the shadows of an alcove in the wall, Kaela Bryant wet her dry lips and tried to quiet her thundering heartbeat. In her mid twenties she was still a thief, still mastering the trade her father had taught her before she had been five years old. However, never had she attempted to steal something quite so valuable as the ring carelessly left on the bedside table in the large room. But she was desperate and she knew knew the jewels and the gold would fetch a good price. Maybe enough to secure passage on the boat and a horse once they came to port. With this ring she would have the means to escape Gobaith and the sins she had committed here.
She listened intently, but the lord's chamber was quiet. Aside from the occasional tread of footsteps in the hallway and the hiss of flames in the dying fire, there was no sound but the incessant pounding in her heart.
Noiselessly she slipped along the wall in the cover of the familiar shadows. Reaching a deft hand out to the table where she plucked her prize, slipping it smoothly and quickly into the small pocket inside her chemise built for just such a time.
Holding her breath, she started for the door. Pausing momentarily to make sure no one would witness her exit, she made her way along the hallway and out of the door into the muggy night air.
She walked south with purpose, her black clothes shielding her from the eyes of the only two people she saw on her way. She walked on until she came to the edge of the island where she sat on the dock, awaiting a means to escape.
