Small Suggestion: Alarm Bell

THis was inspired by the wolf thread

I was remembering the old system.. when Trollsbane used to be under attack

Mychar (s): SKELETONS IN WEST GATE
Mychar ((*double clicks with mouse to run, whislt typing*))
Mychar (s): Help!
Someone else (s): Where are you?
Mychar (s) Skeletons at west gate
Someone else (s): I'm coming
You have been killed, go to the yellow cross to revive
-
Later
-
Tank: Hmm, are there any more of them at the other gates? Lets check
N00b: (s) HELP!
Tank and me: Lets go look for him

My idea.. an alarm bell... an static item which you can just.. Pull; and it gives a 'global message' to all in that town; calling people to arms...

Thats about it

Implementable in 30 seconds, given the custom SFX and graphics. Global broadcasts will stay restricted to GMs I assume.

But is this necessary? I always liked this "#s help", "#s where are you?", "#w dead" - kind of screaming.

I like the idea.
I have often been frustrated myself that the town has a guard, government, Gates and walls, but no way to raise the alarm? The town's just too big to walk across looking for people, and it has too many gates for the few 'guards' it has. Not to mention the two holes in wall.

What about NPC sentries at the gates that would attack monsters?

What about 'lockable' gates?

What about drawbridges or a Moat?

Just some other ideas. :D

medieval idea.. good idea..
my two cents

Sounds quite nice, but it would have the same effect as if someone just shouts ("#s Skeletons at the west gate" vs. "The town bell rings...").
And maybe there will be some funny guys who always ring the bell...

PS: Bring back the double click walk - PLEASE!

Congratulations, Hadrian! This is the first idea of yours that I like. I'd contact Cliu, to make the sound-effect, then Grobby/Martin to make the graphic. It could then be dropped in-game fairly quickly. I suppose there'd have to be a range that you could hear the sound in.

Hm, i can see an annoying part to it..

Retlak walks into the uninhabited part of town wearing a cloak covering his body.
N00b that does not read #me's uses the item
N00b: HELP A SKELETON!

Erm, large figure wearing a cloak. It's highly suspicious, especially with the record breaking amounts of necromancers/demon summoners Gobaith seems to have.

How about instead of everyoen carrying around one of these things, make them items posted at each gate? Then when shift clicked, a message to those in range : "You hear a loud alarm sound from the [direction] gate"

nice.. but people usually run from the gate first.

Whats your point? Don't expect to get a warm welcome as a undead.

He has a cape, no one can see he's undead.

we thought about such a thing on the community meeting. The problem is, currenntly the area of talk, whisper and other emotes are static. In a later version i will try to add a command where the scripter can decide how wide you can hear this item ;)

What alarmclock will it be if you can shout as loud as it rings.

You do realize the bell might be rung by anyone a zillion times a day even if there isn't any attack at all. In real life, such a bell would probably be manned at all times or would be on a very tall area that could be seen by all. In Illarion's case, I doubt the bell ringer will always be seen, especially at times of low player count. So keep that in mind before some guy in a cloak and some people start arguing about whether or not their character were seen ringing the bell.

Someone's Job is to be in a guard tower for hours waiting for an attack, he rings the bell.

@Dyluck: I agree. Example:

One Day:
Bored Man walks into town.
Bored Man: Hmm, where is everyone?
Bored Man rings the bell.
Alert Message: [Enemies at the ___ gate!]
Bored Man: Ooh! Fun!
Bored Man continues to ring the bell.
Alert Message: [Enemies at the ___ gate!]
Alert Message: [Enemies at the ___ gate!]
Alert Message: [Enemies at the ___ gate!]
Alert Message: [Enemies at the ___ gate!]
Alert Message: [Enemies at the ___ gate!]
Et cetera, so on, and so forth.

The Next Day:
No more bells.

..........

@Dante: We have what... 3 active guards or so? The chance of one of them being on for hours, sitting in the exact same spot, is quite slim.

What if normal people get offered more pay to do that job, they could still chat, when danger comes walk into the watch tower and -RIng, ring-

3 guard?? Hardly.. We have .. Taylor.. Revlen.. Alexander.. Delanroth and Qill!
Plus the Knighthood, Siltaris, Arameh, Leon, Kincent, Bidukan and Stephen..

So really there are a lot of defenders in town, but the problem is, only one of us speaks German, Siltaris, so none are really on at that time. And what is worse is that few German speakers want to be apart of the guard/knighthood.

I blame the grey rose.

Uhh.....I speak German (fairly fluently), therefore Alexander does as well. I'm just not sure exactly when the 'Germans' play usually, but I can make sure Alex is on at that time if you need him to be.

Retlak rings the bell at the west gate.
Retlak runs around to the east gate.
Retlak: I want to sell 6 serinjah swords.
Eliza: You want to sell 6 Serinjah swords? here you are, that makes 36 copper coins.

I do like this idea, please put it in.

it could be easily abused. and it will be. end of story

....As I said, guarded watch-towers, the current Governor/Guard Captain would hire people to ring the bell when troubles coming, and the job will only be given to those responsable. Also there will be a key to the watchtower so that teh town bums dont walk in and ring it.

Auto alarms. Gates detect the graphic that passes them?

I'm not seeing how this is any different from players standing in front of or inside Eliza's shop 24/7 ;)

Maybe to prevent people from ringing the bells constantly there could be some sort of time restraint on it (like MSN nudges). ie you ring the bell, and the bell must remain silent for at least X time before it can be rung again. Just a thought.

Retlak rings the bell

Retlak and his army hide out until everything is cool, and then goes in again while the bell can't be rung.

I didn't include the knighthood in my post, but I get what you're saying that we have more than just three guards. And I haven't seen much more than Taylor and Revlen in town when I've been online. Hence, I said active guards. But anyway, 5 guards and 6 knights just doesn't seem enough to keep imbeciles away from the darn bell so it isn't rung hourly or something rediculous like 40 times in 10 seconds. We've always put so much trust into the players, putting them in charge and whatnot (example: you're the governor of TB), and we know that some idiots slip through the cracks and get in the mood to annoy and kill the roleplaying atmosphere. I would suggest allowing only certain players the ability to use these "bells", though then they would be much more useless to the community.

Is it possible to have an NPC 'Bellringer'?

'It' could ring the bell upon detection of 'monster' avatars at the gates. Only problem is it wouldn't be able to detect enemy player avatars, but that's what RP is for right?

I even have a name for this NPC - Quasi Moto

LOL

A good idea, the problem is...it isn't feasible. So I don't like it.

In RL, we got this thing called "barracks duty." Basically, we just guard the entrance of the barracks to make sure Marines to wander in drunk and causing trouble, minors don't enter, no problems go on...

The problem? Everybody is required to do the duty at least once a month, and it is...fcking...boring. Have to stay awake for 24 hours, doing nothing but staring at the desk and maybe answering phone calls. You can't pay me enough to voluntarily do this, so there's a roster we have that says when you have to do it.

Now, imagine doing the same thing in Illarion...doing nothing, but staring at the computer screen for hours...hours...ugh. I imagine you can't pay a character enough to voluntarily do that either.
