So I'm intrigued...

EDIT: this thread probably belongs in the "Newbies" topic

I stumbled across Illarion while viewing a webpage for free games that were potential candidates for play at a local LAN party.

So far, I'm impressed. I come from a several year history of Ultima Online player-run roleplaying communities, and Illarion's online player count is on-par with most of them (at least, the ones that enforce roleplaying and feature a unique world.)

Anyway, I've put in my character application - firsthand experience is the best way to learn about something new. But in the meantime, anyone want to tell me about this thing? What is it, really (up-close and personal?) It looks like it has a great community and a wide variety of players. Also, just out of curiosity is there german spoken in-game? I'm confused by the mixture of german and english I've seen on the website and on the forums as to whether english is the official language, or german, or if they're both used pretty equally.

Oh, and I might as well introduce myself. I'm slag, and thanks for having me! It looks lovely here.

First of all: Welcome to Illarion :D

First: Indeed, our community is great.
Second: the Languages. English and German are used equal. German was the former language, English is the most used language.

Ingame, the most players handle it in the way, that the german players speak german to each other, and if there are english speakers around, all (mostly) speak english. This is no must, but the most handle it in this way.

yes, the english have taken over, go America 8)

don't worry, there really isn't any confusion about the languages.

No, go England and there is something to remember. Don't call it German or English call them the new (Eng) and the old (Ger) language or tongue.

Also, welcome.

Yes, english and german, and dont forget 1337, which shouldn't be spoken in-game, but is useful nonetheless

I thought new was common and old was ancient...

Illarion started as an university project of some German students, so the majority of older players were German.
Of course, as those american devils have to corrupt everything they come across ( ) English is now widely spoken, and as we Germans are polite and respectful people we react to the needs of those who are happy enough to understand their own language after having to attend such a crappy school system.

Welcome to Illarion, stronghold of true roleplayers and generally weird folks.
:D

Common is english and german, ancient is the language of magic. They're two different types, that both german and english speakers can learn.

*reels in the line* we've caught another one! ;)

Welcome to illarion! If you think you're impressed now, just wait. The community is awesome, and the ingame world is so amazing...I don't see how any true roleplayer could scoff at it.

Up close and personal, its a roleplaying game ;) but there's so much more to it. I think the best part is that your character has endless possibilities in game; this is a world where your character can make an actual difference, instead of being some gamemaster's pawn as you play out solely their ideas (of course after a while you'll know better..they control us all ;) ). Basically this is a world that favours the players and thrives on our ideas. Anything is possible, as you'll soon find out :) Good luck and I hope to see you ingame!

Oh, and read the manual please ^_^

From Ultima to Illarion is a big jump, but it's a pleasant change. I've staffed on a few UO shards, and played there for years, but I alwys seem to come back to Illarion. I learned to Rp here, and have some great memories from it.

You'll love it here, the RP is very personal, the players are friendly, and the possibilities for your characters and gaming experience are very broad. Welcome to Illarion, hope you have a great time here.

Hey some of us English speakers have tried leaarning German.....Perhaps just a little to daft or busy, probably the former, to learn it properly. I have personally played a few other games, but I think you will find that Illarion will become a giant rubberband tied to your leg. You might leave, most people do at one point or another, but you will most definately come back. *shakes his head* Just too damned addicting.

No. You're just not aware that the emphasis on learning languages is mercifully and exponentially greater in European countries than that of America and such. In Europe, they have 10-year-olds who can speak three or more languages fluently. Here in America, we have 18-year-olds who can't even spell "dessert" the right way in their native language.

It's true that America's really big geographically, and we're only next to two other countries. But isn't that still kind of sad how monolingual we are even after all this time? And for being a big economical world power?

(But nevermind all this. I could go on all day about "linguistic studies" in America. The frustration can be endless.)

This is getting slightly off topic, but as a study of the linguistic variations among the player base of Illa players it's quite interesting. I'm European (Irish) and can speak two languages quite fluently (English and French), and a third is quite good (Irish).

The thing about english speakers learning other languages is that most feel they don't need to. Most of mainstream films, music, technology is all in english so most think, why bother (i speak french and german a bit, but i'd put myself in that category)

lol, yea we aren't responisble for our actions, I mean comeon!

My problem is lack of use with other languages. When I was young(1-5) I was continually taught English,Spanish, French, German, and Sign Language. However, I then went to public schools, where they taught no secondary languages until like seventh grade. Over time without use languages get lost. :( Hope to pick up German and Latin though. I have to wait until summer when I have more independant study time. Aren't languages fun?! There is a quote I would like to insert here from Austin Powers, but I shall refrain.

I know a few languages--English, Bad English, and Drunk.
:D

I am actually trying to learn German, but it's coming pretty slowly... my main resources are a couple of movies (Lola Rennt, das Expirament, Der Kreiger und die Kaiserin) and Rammstein.

I had been studying hard and so I ran through the door, and german flowed from my mouth and landed like feces upon the floor
I know English. I know Bad English. I know worse English. I know drunken-bastard-foo. I know a little German. I have recently acquired an uncivilized form of Mexi-English.
