Armour and weapons kit.

i dunno if this has been done before, but what would be your reaction if there was a kit of some sort that prolonged a weapons and armors life by cleaning the dammage ect.

in the kit:

Oil- for shining armour and cleaning off rust

Rock- some sort of rock that was used to sharpen swords

special hammer- tamping down dents and general wear-and-tear of the item

I have to disagree. The more armor and weapons break, the more craftsman can actually make money. I make a bunch of things, but all people want are one or two of the big weapons, and then only more of those when they break.

I think that, repairing by a blacksmith is interesting. Heres my idea: Say you have a real nice armor quality peice but its very scraped, a smith could repair the condition of the armor, but in the process looses some quality. Not only is this realistic, because it would loose the temper, but it would cost resources and quality. Since quality will effect the effectivity of the armor, lower quality armors will not be worth repairing, excellent will probobly be retired as keepsakes, and very good or good might be repaired. The repair should only bring it up to condition 6 I think. To keep things simple, armor needs 2 ingot/plate, weapons need 1. Metal thins when you repair it usually, so you need to fill in the lost resources to maintain thickness. All in all, this seems more like luxery level priority though.

First post. :P But I played Illarion a while some years ago.

I agree with Gro'bul. Items could be repaired, but they should never become as good as they used to be when brand new. At some point they should become useless. Not only it would be realistic, it could actually give more jobs to craftsmen. New items should be rather expensive and repairing cheap. But definately not done my NPC.

But i think weapons like swords should mainly lose quality instead of durability. Afterall they become dull, not break. If sharpened they would regain some quality, but lose durabitility(age up). Maybe sharpening could also be done my non-professionals, but it wouldnt work so well etc.

I don't really like this idea. It would soften the position of craftsman and ressource gathers in the fragile economy even more.

The need for new items would be reduced.
Why buying a expensive new sword when this one here can be repaired at least twice ?

The need for ressources would be reduced.
Why digging for X iron ores when the smith only needs very little because he just sells less and/or does not need much for repairs?


Working with weapons, especialy, repairing should soley be done by "professionals" (skill check), otherwise we are weakening the craftman-character-type once more.

All in all:
Nah, don't like it.

Again, game balance is the key. One could easily introduce a way to repair stuff (lower quality and raise durability with a chance to loose the item for good). We all know our current breakage system is totally bugged, it does not exists one could say. But as soon as it works as intended, this change could only be introduced if the mean time to breakage gets lowered alot. Refer to Keikan's post why a longer life cycle of items is not favourable. So, all we'd gain would be faster breakage and the need to repair items quite often. This could be done, but will this improve the overall game experience? Will you think "Woah, cool, I can repair my sword after 10 mummies and that up to 3 times! Where is that frigging anvil in this tomb?" or would your favor "Damn, my sword breaks after 40 mummies, gotta buy a new one from Salathe [no advertisement]!"?

This is much related to recycling old products. Think about these aspects twice from a more general point of view. And think about how other game handle this.

I see the point, but I dont see why it couldnt been made so that it wouldnt ruing the economy.
In RL this is how it goes:
1. I buy a sword and go killing pigs with it.(I do this all the time :lol:)
2. My sword gets a bit dull after few pigs, but I keep using it.
3. My sword get noticable dull after 50 more pigs, but I still keep using it. Its getting pretty hard to use it anymore tho.
4. After 1000 pigs the sword has no cutting edge at all. I might as well us it as a hammer as it has zero cutting power.
5. I ask the local blacksmith sharpen it. He does the job and gets payed for it. The sword is sharp again, but its blade is much thinner now-->Sword ages up and becomes used.

Maybe I could have tryed sharpening the sword myself instead, but I am not too good at it so it might have only got it a bit sharper and lose alot of steel from the blade. If I would have never sharpened it, it would have broke up anyway after very long time. And who would like to use a sword that dull anyway?
What we have now is this:
1. I buy a sword and go kill pigs.
2. After 3 pigs the blade Is still cutting like a dream, but there seems to be a small scrath in it. Where the hell did that come from?
3. After 5 pigs the blade is still cutting perfect! Great sword! But wait...here seems to be more scrathes in it. Weird.
4. After 8 pigs the sword suddently brakes appart! I cant afford buying a new one...What can I do? I make shoes out of the 8 pigskins I got and the NPC halfling(who is staring at the wall all the time) pays me 40coins for the shoes. But I still cant afford a new sword.

The current system is surely much better than the old one where weapons didnt brake at all and tools broke up with 2 hits, but i seems silly to buy several weapons a day as a peacefull tailor character who is just trying to make a living. If items could be repaired it would surely reduce the amount of new items needed from crafters, but same time it would bring all the new repairing jobs to crafters as well.

I wasn't saying that you could fight with a sword then suddenly make it brand new and brilliant. You dont have to get defensive about your craftsman accounts because there is a chance you would ruin your armor/sword by using the hammer to fix it, this wouldn't ruin the economy either because you would need to be a very good blacksmith to fix certain armours. Think about it, you wouldn't have a fighter with no blacksmith skills fixing his nightplate armor because he has no idea how it is made. This wasnt made to insult you Pocal ect about your characters getting ripped off because this game isnt about money making.
