A Life too Soon Taken

Post by Devrah Windslasher ~ »

Devrah put her head to her forehead, nodding dully at Kamik's words.

'I'm going to go get a portal.. wait here..' the words swirled around before they penetrated the fog that was in her mind. A cold sweat coated her forehead, and her steps were shaky. 'Mmhhmm...'

Annoyed with herself, Devrah forced her body to take a few more steps forward. These dizzy spells had become common in the latest few weeks of her pregnancy. Her vision clouded over again, and she reached a hand out to the nearest object to steady herself.

It was the pillar.

She had just registered this when a sound behind her made her turn around, blearily...

She recognized that face, those sunken eyes...

She had time for one thought before the saber pierced her stomach cleanly.

Aokan.

She crumpled to the ground, a large pool of blood collecting around her. Her eyes went in and out of focus, and by pure reflex, she reached to her belt. The dagger. She used the last of her strength and wits to pull it from its sheath, and slashed it across his face as viciously as she could.. but it was too late.. the world was turning black...

When Kamik returns, he finds the gates closed.
"Strange", he thinks.

- Devrah? - he calls, but no answer.

He opens the gates and runs outside, dropping the book, remembering the words Rhiannon told him earlier. Suddenly, he realized what had happened before seeing it.
Running outside only confirmed his expectations: Aokan.
The pillar was marked with blood, Devrah's blood and... their son. His wife was laying on the ground, uncouncious.
At his sight, Aokan started to run, with a bleeding cut across his face.
Many things would pass through the mind of a person watching this scene. But to a father and a husband, and in the case Kamik was both...

He couln't think.

His legs became heavy, like stone, and for a moment he couldn't move. It was the voice of the elfess that brought him back.
- What is going on here?

What do you think his name could be?

- Devrah! - he shouted running to her and kneeling before her. The rest was a blurry. The inn. The bed. The blood.

- No matter what, elfess, save her.

The baby...

I think I know a good name, Kamik.

The elfess called Ilsiwen took care of his wife, saved her life, gave her a sleeping potion to ease her pain. Kamik could only watch. He knew what was his part. Aokan. Yes. Aokan.
He would only find peace when he digged himself a grave for Aokan as he made him do for his own son.
But the grave was already there, with another name engraved in it: Elliria, Kamik's mother; although it wasn't him who digged that grave - it was Dominik, his father.
Kamik walked aimlessly to the watching eyes, his cloth soaked in blood, his cheeks marked with the tears, carrying a small form wraped in white cloth. The cloth so red now.
Cry.
How much time have passed since he last cried?
He cried during every moviment of his hands digging the ground, he cried when he placed the dead baby inside the hole, he cried when he covered it. But he didn't cry when he prayed.

And what is the name, Devrah?

Back to the city, the world around him trembling and becoming darker. His wife sleeping at the inn. He could hear voices... they were calling his name and at first he thought they were ghosts from the past. But they weren't. Kamik didn't recognize the voices, if they were his past whispering, he would.
The voices that called his name said another name - Aokan - and mentioned that the man was jailed.
- Jail...?
- Troll's Bane Jail, I assume... - said one of the voices.
As he walked to the jail, he drew the double axe from his back. As he walked to the jail, he thought of Devrah. As he walked to the jail, he thought of his son.

I am sure you will love it.

Kamik entered the jail and noticed many faces in the gray world that was surrouding him.
- Open the cell - he said, axe in hand.

The name... is Revlen.
