The voyage was long; longer it seemed than her original trip to the island, and even the trip back to the mainland she had taken a little over a month ago.

Juliet gazed over the side of the ship, looking at the water rushing by, Though she had been on two ocean trips before, she had never seen this movement of waves by the wooden sides of the boat, for on both previous trips she had been confined to her cabin beneath the deck.

Juliet Davenport, forevermore she mused to herself, Never will I be forced to become Juliet de Ferdinand.

Tears burned in her eyes and she had to bite her lip to hold them back. So many emotions welled within her, and she could not quite sort them all from each other.

So much had happened. The month between the journey home and the journey back to Gobiath had defined more of her life than any other period of her sixteen years before.

Gazing over the side of the boat, Juliet knew it was time. Time for the final step. From within a pocket of the fine, white brocade dress she wore, she withdrew a fine gold chain, with a large gold charm on it. The charm bore the symbol of her captivity; Ferdinand's coat of arms. This charm, so light and pretty to the casual beholder's eyes, had become like a talisman of slavery to Juliet, and the fact that for a few brief days she had been free of its burden only made it that much more difficult when Ferdinand had retrieved it and placed it back around her neck, claiming his ownership over her once more.

Now was different. Now was the final casting of the shackles.

Juliet gripped the chain in her hand, and held her arm out over the side of the boat. One by one, she opened her fingers, letting the hateful thing fall.

*splash*

With a froth of waves, almost as if the sea was devouring the charm with the same intensity that Juliet had wished to cast it off, the necklace disappeared from her life forever, and with it, her last link to Ferdinand. Her last sign of bondage.

The door was unlocked.
