As to why so many people sided with the dwarfs, it is easy to explain. In the recent weeks, there were many incidents of orcs breaking laws, insulting, provoking, threatening and attacking people. The deeds committed by quite a number of different orcs did not win your race many friends and in the line of battle you could read the answer.
