proposal for use of discarded items.

Post by Ellaron »

Problem:
I was thinking about all those items that are made and not sold to either NPCs or PCs. They tend to build up in the depot until space becomes a problem and then they are thrown away, either out of site, or more irritatingly at the feet of Mugush or Eliza.

Solution:
I noticed that the large brown chests with the open lids act as a depot but the items only stay there for a very short time before vanishing. I wondered if a variation on these chests could be set up in each town as a "community chest". Then unwanted items could be placed in them and a fraction of their cost be used against the cost of upgrading or upkeeping the towns. Obviously only a very small portion of the value of each item would be fed back to the leaders, council, elders, king or whatever.

For:
No more wasted items, more responsibilities put on the leaders, easier to get money for new construction or restoration. Increased roleplay due to aid being sort from other towns, ransoms etc. Money might be able to be fed back into resident merchants pocket boosting money circulation. Mugush and Eliza not crushed under the weight of discarded items.

Against:
Possibly hard, impossible, to code. Might be thought to increase power gaming.

Well that's it. Feel free to rip away but try to be constructive in your destruction  .

The idea is nice. However, the only part I see hard to code is the fraction going to the leaders. Since this is entirley RPed, and there is no special coding on Pendar sayng he is the guard, I dont see how this works out.

Besides that, good idea. Powergaming is the last thing on my mind.

Good point.
It will need coding so that each item has a value eg: staff handle = .001 of a copper, sabre = 1 copper ...etc. So you place ten sabres in the chest and 10 copper gets added to the total by the code, 10 staf handles and .01 copper gets added. At the end of an amount of time (day, week, month) the total, rounded down to the nearest copper, is paid to a named leader, or financial admin in the case of a council, of the town in question.
It will be up to them to decide where and how the money is distributed for building works, guards, ransoms, buying items, town events or whatever.
This will also lead to more interest on who is a leader and how they are acting.

Thanks for the input.

I like this idea. Powergaming for what? 100 staff handles to get 1 copper, its a huge waste of time to try that. I would just say every server sweep they get carried away and added to a stored variable (I guess?) but a gm or "merchant" would have to physically present them with the amount this variable showed. The only requirement would having an active leader. Overall, I really like this idea if the junk items are priced correctly it could be a really good addition. I think auto-calculating-deleting would eliminate possibility to take things out if it were possible and would not fill it up. Good presentation of the proposal too.
