How to create a character / how to give it depth
So your account has been accepted and you are now about to create your characters. You need a fitting name, its appearance and the most important thing: a background story.
Maybe you have already a rough idea of your character. Let’s say we want to create a male human. A craftsman from a simple milieu. As due to this milieu we give him a simple but fitting name. I usually choose names which are already existing. (take a look at the end of this thread to find some links.)
I think Zacharia would be a nice one for our craftsman. Zacharia Cornelli.
So Zacharia needs of course an appearance. Ingame the graphic of all the male humans look similar, but that doesn’t mean that Zacharia can’t look different. With the #me – command you can describe how your character looks like, his emotions and actions.
That’s the wonderful thing about roleplay, you can give your character the appearance you wish. From blonde til black, red or brown hair. A pale or a deep brown skin. Slim or muscular. Most people put all their fantasy in their eyecolours. (“Eyes are the mirrors of our soul”)
In our case Zacharia is a craftsman, so I think he should be about average height, a little bit muscular. Let us give him black hair and blue gleamy eyes. His hair is of course short.
But that’s not all, that would be just the obvious details. Lets go deeper. Maybe Zacharia has a small scar at his right cheek or a birthmark at his neck. Those little details make your character interesting.
Theoretically Zacharia would be playable by now. But what do we know about him?
Nothing, exactly.
Zacharia is just an inanimated figure.
Lets go back to our concept. “A craftsman from simple milieu”. Okay. Good. But to be honest… It sounds boring, doesn’t it?
No worries, our rough concept doesn’t make our whole char. Right now we are going to make him fascinating!
Take a piece of paper and write down your thoughts for the char so that you can pick the best ideas out of it afterwards.
To make Zacharia interesting we need to give him humanly traits. Maybe Zacharia is a very introverted, very shy person in contrast to his muscular appearance. Why do humans become shy? I think Zacharia never had the chance to play with other children when he was young, maybe because he had to help his father on the farm. His father was of course a strict and stern person so Zacharia never got much experience with interpersonal relations, especially since his mother died when he was little and his stepmother never was much interested in the young boy.
Aaah, now Zacharia finally gets animated and depth. But how to show other people that ingame?
You need to ask yourself how a shy person does behave and describe it that way to the others. Our char maybe would stutter when other people speak to him, especially in the presence of women
When we get a “Greetings!”, we can react with:
#me looks up quickly from his depot and cocks his head to the voice with an intimidated look. “G..greetings.”
When we find our char fascinating ourself, mostly the other people will do it as well.
Now this is really a good start. Most people do it this way. They make a concept and then develop their characters ingame. When you interact a lot it’s pretty hard to stick to the role you chose once for your char. And there is nothing bad with it. It’s like in real life: cause and effect. It’s very likely that Zacharia meets a nice woman and he loses his shyness with her help or maybe in a very dangerous situation he suddenly gets brave.
Probably Zacharia never wanted to be a craftsman, his dream always was to become a warrior but he never had the chance due to his father. But now… now he can develop.
Now I have two more tips for our character Zacharia.
If you are not sure how to play your character right and you are not sure how he should react in different situations I can recommend you following ways of getting to know your char better:
And so on. You can write this biography as long or as short as you want. Just important that it helps you. But why do we pick exactly those details? Those details highlights what the cause is for your characters behaviour and feelings.
Zacharia ‘s dream to become a warrior was caused by the storytelling of his mother and probably he has an averion of alcohol.
After this interview your character will probably grow dear to your heart. You now know his past, his weaknesses, his strength, his behaviour and everything which breathes life into him.
And with time you will recognize that your character got an own life.
Creating Zacharia was an easy task. He is a human and since we all are humans we know how they are and how it is to live in humanly society.
But what about other races? Elfs and Halflings are not *so much* different from humans but lets think about lizards, orcs and dwarfs. They have foreign cultures, foreign morals, foreign believings.
At this point it is helpful to take a look here:

Here you can find any information you need to know about other races. How do they live? What do they like or dislike? It will help you to build a better background story for your char and for his behaviour.
Now you can give your fancy full scope. No matter if lizard, dwarf, human or Halfling; no matter if bard, thief, craftsman or fighter. Never forget to ask yourself:
“Why is my character like it is?”
and never forget to inform yourself about what you are playing. You need it to give your character fidelity. (A dwarf who dislikes beer is as beyond believe as a lizard who shies at water.)
Good luck and see you ingame!

Now I have two more tips for our character Zacharia.
If you are not sure how to play your character right and you are not sure how he should react in different situations I can recommend you following ways of getting to know your char better:
- 1. Write a little biography in the first person. In the view of your character.
“My name is Zacharia Cornelli and I’m 23 years old. I’m born in a village called (…) and I lived together with my father and my stepmother.
My father was a farmer and carpenter and so there was no other chance for me than learning the same craft as he did. And to be honest: I hate it. I never wanted to learn the art of carpentry but my father forced me too.
My mother died when I was little and I have nearly no memories about her anymore. I remember very well that she sang lullabies at my bed every night and told me stories about brave warriors and knights who fought for justice and to protect other people. I loved this stories. My stepmother in contrast was never really nice to me. She had this vein to yell at me when she had too much wine and in general never cared much about me. Main thing was I did my work…
I never played much with the other children, because (…)”
- 2. Now if you close your eyes and you still can’t see how your char walks, speaks and acts like, do following: Write an interview!
You: “Hello Zacharia. So… you left your home as I can see. What did you make to?”
Zacharia: “Well, … I think it was time for me to leave this village. I never liked the people there a lot. And to be honest I wanted to get away as far as possible from the reach of my father and his wife.”
You: “Yes, I can understand that well. What are you going to do now?”
Zacharia: “I will try to improve my carpentry skills and try to sell things, of course… Though I have to admit that I’m very nervous when I think about that I have to interact with other people who I don’t know … that’s the only thing I miss…”
You: “And are you going find a girlfriend?”
Zacharia: “A g..girlfriend? Uhm. … I’m not sure… I can’t imagine that there is a girl who would fall in love with … someone like me, you know.”
You: “Sounds like you would be afraid. Speaking of fears, what do you fear at most?”
Zacharia. “ … “
(…)
After this interview your character will probably grow dear to your heart. You now know his past, his weaknesses, his strength, his behaviour and everything which breathes life into him.
