Magical Correspondances

A little while back I did make a bunch of magical correspondances for the illarion game and its mythos.

Unfortunately however it did not go down to well, and I felt I should remove it. Now some time has passed I think I should give it another go, though in an attempt to avoid what happened last time, I will post my draft versions on here untill we can agree of a finalised version, which I will slap on the rpg board and attempt to get it stickied.

My reasons for attempting this are pretty transparrent, I want to deepen the mythos of Illarion and provide some kind of universal material people can refer to for thier RP'ed Rituals.

If this is a bad place to post this the mods are free to move it to wherever they see fit.

The first draft is as follows, info has been taken from various wicca sites aswell as Moonsilver and the Horoscope post. Certain discrepancies exist, which need to be ironed out not only here, but in the horoscope post/moonsilver if we are to have complete continuity, though some may feel that is uneeded...

Also needed is correspondance of stones/gems to attributes aswell as herbs and runes.

Though obviously we may need to wait untill the new magic system rears its head before we can correspond these two aspects.

Any other aspects people can think of are wholly welcomed, but please remember, I want this to produce something productive, and not turn into a bitchfest between people who think they know more. So keep your comments nice and clean, suggest what changes are to be made, they will be debated and alterations will be made as needed.

Please remember this is a first draft.

Maybe you should have talked with the people who develope this part of Illarion and given it to them? Nanuk (not sure if active) and Damienasaurus (Latharen Caine) are background story people that I know of.

Erm...i don't like this idea. We have this correspondances more or less in a other way allready. I doubt that it would be good or necessary to change it.

I find it rather odd, that ordinary players can in essence change nothing. If someone influential were to say/claim that Adron is the god of lager, then some people would accept that as the truth (not the players, but I mean the characters). Odd example: Bush claimed there were weapons of mass-destruction in Iraq. Did he find any? No, but some people did believe him, still believe him, even though it is not true (or is true).

What I mean is, people have all the reason to doubt the books in the library (Is this information from Moonsilver available in the IG library, if not, then he should have all the more reason to post this magical correspondence, even though it is only what his character, and maybe other characters, believe). How do people know things IG nowadays anyhow? There are no books they can refer too, and I doubt everyone got the same information through being raised by their parents. That would be, in my opinion, rather proposterous. (Or however you spell that anyway)

I agree to Misj, but I fail to see why it is not as you describe.

Hm, when I started the game, I found basically all sources of information listed above, websites and IG books alike, to be very outdated or simply wrong.

After I started scripting, I basically fixed many things that didn't work oder had never been implemented to match the descriptions already there - mostly the books.

In my observation the only real way to learn about the game is IG from characters who already know. So I do my best to spread "lost" knowledge in the game.
The only other way that works is ask a GM or dev OOC. Which doesn't contribute to the game so I'd like to keep that to a minimum for real bugs.

As for the IG books: It would be great if the information in them would be more accurate. It would also be an improvement if you had to look for certain books with valid information in special places. It's weird that any bookshelf in the world will produce any book on any topic. That would be way too easy if the information in them was any good. :-)

Is it really too much to ask, a little help in refinining some background information, most of it can be found, yes, but most of it is out of date and hard to find.

The aim of this project is to simply collect all the information, update it, add certain things that are missing, get some more detail into it, and present it as a whole so that it doesnt take weeks of researching scraps of old websites to find it.

Old ring correspondances have been added.

My opinion : moonsilver should be scrapped, and its information kept in IG books... i mean, the chars all seem to know too much when they come to this "new land", all the customs ect...

@ misj > you spelled that correctly... EDIT > [ i thought...] it was wrong [happy now?]

So you are a volunteer to write all this stuff into IG Books?

Nice :D

I think it would be fun for ingame books to have certain stories and tips. For instance, I the player had no clue what a Gnoll was, but everyone else ingame seemed to know what they were. If there were a book in the library about hunting and what lives in forest, it would help fill in holes.
Plus you could have fun in the way you write the books ..

@ misj > you spelled that correctly...
Why do you always act like a smartass when you aren't even half clever?
Okay, if you were actually bright people could cut you some slack, but you aren't and frankly it is becoming irritating.

It's spelled preposterous.

Thank you Conscience, I was initially going to look it up in the dictionary, but I was lazy. And I do not think I am smart, just so you know.

You are smart enough to take my ass out.

And ive PMed Hadrian to tell him to calm down, he is going to get in trouble one of these days.

umm.. thank you i'lll try to calm down

How come nobody has talked to me about the books?

Because moonsilver is old. Damien and others are just working on a complete new and better background. It will be publiced as soon as it is ready. It would be senseless work to write all that old moonsilver texts into a book which will be old and useless as soon as the new background will be official.

So if they're doing all of that... why dont they just make them books in the first place? Seems logical to me...

Hmm..Background sounded weird for some reason. As if they are giving the site a new background. I personally would have used the word content, to prevent confusion ;). Backgrounds belong in the desktop thread.

ever heard of "Backgroundstory"? Background just fits it.

I just said I knew what you were talking about. It just made me instantly think of my own background (<3 wuv my background by the way). Just to avoid confusion among the rest dearest dwarf.

Need a huge dwarfy hug? :D Or maybe a tiny kiss for a tiny person. *gg*

Anyone care to explain why I even bother?

You really can do whatever you want, you just won't be accepted by the older players like Damien and his "lackies" . But i am sure others will be willing to accept what you put out there.

Posted: Thu Aug 11, 2005 9:02 pm
by Mempriclus
I posted it here specifically so that everyone, including damien and his "lackies" could contribute, but that it wasnt solely reserved for them, I wanted everyone to have a say in what went on.

If they are writing a new background completely, I wish they would get in touch with me. Im just trying to give something for people to look at so when they want to perform a ceremony or something they have some material to work with.

That is what Damien is doing I think, but again, you dont need his permission to do it. There can be two branches of magic beliefs, different philosophical beliefs.

Posted: Thu Aug 11, 2005 9:16 pm
by Galim
Yes, but Damiens branch is the true and really existing branch. He is the official background writer. what he writes and decides for the background IS the background and it is true and real. When he says magic works like this and that, than it DO work like that. of course you can make your own views of magic too, but they will be accepted perhaps just ingame. ooc we know that damiens magic system is true and right, and yours just something someone ig had an idea about.

if you decide to have or play something other than damien and others decided in the new moonsilver, you need a good rp explanation.

Please tell me that was sarcasim.

Posted: Thu Aug 11, 2005 9:20 pm
by Galim
um, nope.Why should it be?

Posted: Thu Aug 11, 2005 9:27 pm
by Mempriclus
You mean to tell me Damien is going to write a background that goes into so much detail he will list the symbollism of every colour and the effect of every herb and the time of every constellation and the name of every constellation and re-write the meaning of every god and redo the entire calendar?
