Could someone tell me how to read the books?I click on them and select them with shiftand that doesn't work. Am I doing something wrong?

First get the book out.. by USING the shelf.. and shift+click on the book you want

It will come out... and on the floor. then USE the book to read it

The counter at the bottom determines which page you will read...

I dont get it. it still doesn't work. I must be doing something wrong but i don't know what

use = shift + left click
use shelf.
box appears with books in.
left click books to read titles.
use book you want to read.
book appears on floor (do not stand on book).
set counter (bottom of screen) to "001".
use book.
set counter to "002".
use book ...etc..

You gain knowledge about the game both as a player and in a library research skill for your character. There's no harm in having either.

A long time ago in that you learnt the runes from the library. Or a really long time ago in that all the magic books could be bought from the shop?
