Kind of like my old peoples topic. There are so many diffrent love triangles and squares and pentagons in illarion right now. Before (Time of the drought and before) you had just a few characters getting married or falling in love, so it was easy to keep track of. Now everybody I talk to is getting married or falling in love, or something. I need a note book just to keep track of who is dating who because it changes every week. Illarion is not a Highschool :) even though there are alot of highschool students playing. I know what you all are doing. YOU WANT WEDDING PRESENTS, your going to make Erart a poor poor man once you all get married.

Edit My topic name rocks 8) Im a poet

*Cough*. Popular thing, apparently. Sometimes in the back of my head, I say to myself it's compensation through a fantasy world for something never achieved or achieved well in RL :P . Which I still think is entirely possible.

And we're all fairly young. We've all got hormones or something like that. And in the game, as always said before, we can always do things that we can't try or do in real life. Often in this case, it's flirting. That fun little hinky-dink you've always wanted to try but maybe never could bring yourself to do the right way. Or maybe it never turned out the way you wanted.

But now you have an "imaginary" character personification you can hide behind. So if you flirt, it's not *cough* entirely your fault. Or something like that. Therefore, everyone is likely to take advantage of this fact. You can't necessarily run around killing big nasty monster things with a sword in RL. You can't necessarily pick firnis blossoms and make a potion. You can't necessarily trek a journey across some land in search of goodies and adventure.

Same thing with love. Maybe most of us find it easier to fall in love in a game, where you can watch everything, and know things that you wouldn't ordinarily, because you're technically a third party view. And this is control that you can never feel in the RL worlds.

Or something like that.

Oh I know why they do it. And plus it provides a great rp arena to explore like kidnappings or *cough* erart giving flowers to a woman getting married *cough*. Im just saying its a bit much.

Not really much to do about it. There will forever be powergamers. There will forever be the madmen. There will forever be good conversations. There will forever be bad conversations. There will forever be crappy roleplay trying to counter and beat out the bad roleplay. There will forever be good roleplayers who will defend that noble cause. There will forever be those who believe they can pwn, and those who can really achieve victory. There will forever be cockroaches, because we will never be rid of them. There will forever be questions of reality, and questions of why the hell. There will forever be--

--dramatically romantic involvements between characters that can all be described with some absurd, geometrical adjective. Starting from triangle and up.

You know I dont know if thats in insult or not. Oh well

Just dont make illarion like the real world where married couples only last a year or two on average. In other words STAY TOGETHER, that way my notebook will be easier to maintain

Uh-huh. I eventually gave up trying to remember who was who's Darling and Forever-Love. I figured someone would tell me eventually if I ever needed the information. Then I would always be up-to-date, because the only thing I would hear would be the latest. Or something like that.

Darn. I had some really good post in Off-Topic a long time ago about this subject or something similar to it. Of course, I'm sure you know what it means to have a good post a long time ago in the Off-Topic forum  .

Delakaniam,
makes many valid points and indeed I have no doubt the numerous romances with in illarion have to do with general player age and the freedom to be different to what or how we are in RL.
Oh I know why they do it
There is another reason above and beyond facilitating rp interaction of a dramatic nature or living out fantasy romantic ideas one is unable to aspire to in rl.
There are certainly four major rp character types with in illa,
1. Those who truly do seem to play competitively spending more time mastering the game at a mechanic level and being best. This is not a PG issue simply its there kicks and you will always find them kicking ass in a fight or selling best wares...often on a few different characters. Who seem to vary in actual chracter depth between non and shallow.
2. Those who play to be the hero of there own DND campaign, with characters who can always be found in a dungeon or seeking an adventure or partaking in some evil doing. The rogues and mercenary’s of Illarion.
3. Those who play to indulge in some light banter sharpen there wit and generally have a laugh.
4. Character actors wishing to create and or destroy a fictional figure on an epic scale, drama, laughter and varied emotions. Those who rp and in doing so live an alternative life for some hours of the day.

Now of course one cant just drop players behind the screen into each box, I have characters from 2,3 and 4.
How ever my actual point is 4, I am currently playing Pendar very actively as i have since finding this game. To me he has taken on a life of his own in this interactive fiction i help to create. I like to fill his little life with laughter, drama joy and sadness and see what comes out at the end.
The romantic attachment he has to Caitlin has spawned some amazing rp. From the drama of kidnappings through to touching moments that make one go awww. Yet above all the character of Caitlin has been a formative influence on pendar and enriched his story and depth as a character, changing and steering his development which began the day he entered the island in ways I would never have done with out that’s characters input.
I could go on for hours I am sure, yet i suppose the crux of the matter is that for those who play with the depth and vested emotion one would associate with a great work of fiction. The players who tend to win my heart, romantic attachments much like friendships in our multi user world become a crucial plot point and formative influence on their ever changing characters.
That’s how i see it any way, and although it has been and remains fun to play certain characters and flirt or conduct one self in a manner so over the top as to be only possible in cyber space. That’s just the smallest part of romance can bring to rp......
