i have just started a mage how do you research spells and such

I suppose, you could read lots of books, especially the ones about magic. The magic system is not implemented yet, in the near future hopefully.

yes but what do you press i used the book case down the bottom left hand side theres a list of books in there what do you do then?

For goodness' sakes, Dude500, you could find the answers to all these questions either in-game or by searching the forums. They're not even far back, most of these questions have been asked within the first 2 pages of forum topics.

Use the book you want, you can find out the titles by left clicking on them once, some books say nothing at all. To select a book, hold shift+left click the books you want and release. The book will show up on the floor next to the bookcase. To read the book, first make sure your not standing on it, the counter at the bottom middle of the screen with the number 1 on it is what you can use to read different pages. If the counter is set to 1, shift+click the book, you will read page 1. The up arrow blow the 1 in your counter will raise the number by 1, the next to the left by 10, the next to the left by 100. Click the up arrow under the one to turn to page 2, shift click the book to read the next page.
