Question about starting out items...and professions

In the manual it says, and I quote, "If you leave the library you will recognize you don't have much money and only very few equipment. Only a hammer and a shovel, like the peasants on their fields."
I've created two characters, and they both started out with a torn cape, bad mace, and bad helmet...is this a glitch in the manual?
Also, which starting profession should you choose if you wish to becom a preist?

Points to you for haveing read the manual, how ever as you have just seen that is a little out of date. A new and improved hand book is in the works and your characters are equipped correctly

.
As to a priest, well eventually your statitistics your distributed when creating your character will determine your sucess at useing priest skills. How ever from an RP side..I would take a look at this link..
http://www.moonsilver.de/english/gods/gods.htm
From there you can better decide which god your character is devoted to and will eventually dedicate him/herself to through priesthood. It may help you find a craft as well...for example
Irmorom- followers would lightly be a smith or trader but would also excell at any profit based profession.
MalachÃn- A follower of this god may seek a profession in weapons perhaps as a soldier, guard or even mercenary.
And so it goes...
Welcome to the game, hope you enjoy yourself

Mostly the starting choice just gives you items that would suite that "class" and some basic skills to begin with. It doesnt affect character progression at all though
Haveing said mage, I have a crafter character at present and a warrior who smiths

After the wipe, the starting point is a small iland with an NPC. There you can choose, what you want to become, fighter, craftsman or magician. Your decision only decides the starting items, you get. Like you wrote, you have choosen fighter. After this decision your char will be teleported to the real starting point, depending on race.
As far as the decision only is responsible for the starting item, it doesn't matter which you choose to become a priest.
Btw. all kind of magic isn't yet implemented but will come in the near future.
