I searched for this and didn't find anything [much].. so here it goes
I propose that special weapons be placed in the map on random places... these weapons do not rot, decay or get used... and are faster and more damaging.. they are legendary... and cant be crafted
If a character wants one, he has either to be lucky, or to fight... example protecting the grave of ***** would be an army of undead, but if you defeat them, you may reach his corpse and take the legendary sword....

Please, think about your proposal more.
How powerful would these items be?
How rare would they be?
How powerful would the monsters guarding them be?

Not so long ago a big list for 'random events' for crafting , etc was on these boards and yes, quests do sometimes give you items.

Right now it's kind of difficult to create unique items (I know specifically because I tried to have one made for a quest), but soon it will be easily available and consist of a few lines of code.

You can get them from quests, I have/had one in the current client. I kind of hope they remain difficult to aquire and create because they shouldn't be common whatsoever. Certain Items became very common in the last client which I didn't really like.

we have this right now
when nightmare was killed he dropped an icebird amulet, poison sword, and firesword, and supposedly some rare armor, but i havent heard anything about it or seen it.
ANd finding these items by accident is a bad idea imo... But going on some insane quest to get them seems good. Like with the undead caverns, if they could be even deeper and dangerous than they are we could have some crazy strong item at the very bottom, that can be gotten once every two months or somethin

Someone who only plays RP would never get such rare items, because his/her skills are to low to fight against strong monsters. Maybe he/she starts to powergaming to become stronger to get the item.
So i think, it's a bad idea.... because it will only force powergaming.

*agrees*
As it is now, RPing is still not really encouraged. (It's getting better, thank ye quest GMs) But the game still relies to much on skills, which, being the lazy bastard that I am, do not have much time for. Thus, such artifacts are for the "OMG I DO NOT HAVE A LIFE LOLOLO!!!!!111" as someone so creatively stated once, or for the "OMG I FOUIND A BUGGGGGG. SHALL I JOOOSE IT?!!111". I'm sorry, that is, and I shall use an abbrevation which I totally loathe: i(n) m(y) h(onest) o(pinion). imho, for the ones who are not so good with such abbrevations like the lazy english people.

Apparently most are found by fighters...
What if you were to make them by mistake?? [ok maybe a bit strange] you start making an axe handle, and a blade comes by itself and you have a special sword,,
Finding them whislt exploring isn't such a bad idea i suppose, or small quests which dont require much skill "Get me XX of wool, and i will give you a reward"

I wish I would, because many of the postings in this forum are really annyoing and stress you.
Better idea? Sure.powerful items should every time get just into possession of palyers by good rp, nothing else. no "finding on the street" and no "oops was felt on my head?".
A GM makes a Quest, you take aprt, and if your rolepaly was worth you could get something. Or you can suggest roleplay on your own. you are a smith and you are a damn good one? suggest the gm's how you could make a rare powerful item. suggest a quest which involes other palyers, which brings them fun. and if you do it good you could get what you want, without fighting.

Reading the forums is not mandatory Galim.

For many players it would be better, because they could learn more about how to make REAL roleplay.

RP is one thing.. slicing through who knows how many enemies to reach it is another...
My char is a craftsman/archer... i will be unable to actually get anything by fighting yet...While the experts may get them.. [ok i could steal them... but its not in his char]

Searching through dungeons and tombs adventurers might come across an "excellent, nearly decayed" artifact sword/dagger/axe/warhammer/staff is not that bad of an idea I don't think. Artifacts would be old and decayed, uber-cool items will always be long quest rewards as it looks now. Collectors would probobly buy these items, or you could roleplay it as a relative or ancestor of your's sword. These would be pretty nice weapons for the little time till you broke them fighting, but wouldn't be any weapons like double axe or battle staff. These could even be artifact tools, of a famous farmer or crafter too.
