Staff problems

I can't seem to equip my staff.
I've tried every conceivable
block.
Is this a bug or is the staff I
bought a non equipable item?

P.S It is the staff with the grey
knob ending on it.

Is there a big red "hand in use" sign in your other hand?

No, I have nothing else
equipped.

Edit: figured out what I did wrong.
