Whittling

Implimenting a whittling skill would be a lot of fun and could be used to make a lot of items that a plain carpenter should not be able to make such as bracelets, necklaces, wooden masks, canes, or small figurines and wooden swords for children. You could buy a special knife from Sam and sell the crafted items to Eliza. I thought it would be interesting to have wooden jewelery in game for people who's characters are not as rich as others. Masks could be used for many purposes such as theiving or entertainment in general.

You would need to add a place for them to the 'what a character is wearing' area for masks to be implemented, which might be a pain. As for making them effective, that could be done by not giving your name. Or by replacing your name with something descriptive like cat-masked elf, or butterfly-masked halfling (depending on the range of mask items producable). Sadly I would guess it might be impossible (without really significant development work) to have it so that one could !name someone wearing a mask and have it either remember that as the name of the person in question while masked, or have it cancel when the mask wearer removes the mask. Also I would be surprised if the player numbers could be removed, so people who know you well will be able to see through the disguise, which would require a certain amount of rping around.

But masks would still be fun to have in game anyway. They can be very simple and we can rp that, if we want, rp that they are still simple or beautifully extravigant.

It is a nice idea, but it
can be all rp'ed, so I doubt
it been implemented.

eg. if you play a child character you
can say...
#me a seven year old boy/girl plays
with a miniture wooden horse.

Then so can crowns, goblets, and vases to name a few.

It's called carpentry.. you can always RP your whittling.

I know what you mean but whittling is for more detailed work. You can't make a detailed piece of jewelery with a saw.

So what will you use? a knife?

Technically you can also RP all of the following (taken from the list of skills on the main-site[implemented and to-be implemented]):
  • Herb lore
    Magic
    Languages
    Thievery
    Smithing
    Goldsmithing
    Mining
    Gem Cutting
    Peasantry
    Library research
    Glass blowing
    Tailoring
    Baking
    Fishing
    Lumberjacking
    Carpentery
    Magic resistance
    Parry
    Distance fighting
    Concussion weapons
    Puncture weapons
    Slashing weapons
    Wine growing
    Burning bricks
    Construcion working
    Trading
    Butchery
    Tanning
    Weaving
    Stonemason
    Martial arts
    Healing
    Lockpicking
    Setting traps
    Swimming
I think the words "It can already be RPed, so it shouldn't be/probably won't be implemented" should be stricken from use, since we already have so many things that can be roleplayed.

I support the idea of whittling. Making mostly useless accessories from sticks and logs is a great idea. (To go further, it could be a sub-skill of carpentry (make branches, then whittle things from the branches). This would be a good way to integrate that skill.

The problem with roleplaying things is that there are no rules to what you can do, whereas with a game system like mining etc there are. Although roleplaying is the essential base of the game I think its important to remember that Illarion is a graphical rpg.

Heh heh. Or a wooden pipe, so that clicking on it and the sibanac would make the plant dissappear :)

I can see it now:

Quinasa stuffs the wooden pipe with sibanac and lights it.
[shift+click sibanac click wooden pipe]
[shift+click stuffed pipe click self]
Quinasa: You are stoned.

Oh Geexas, Quin XD !! *rolling on the ground laughing*.

This whittling seems to be an interesting idea, if it goes along the lines that a certain tool is created for the purpose. I suppose all sorts of little trinkets, jewelry, and even wooden spoons, forks, bowls, and other utensils could come out of this  .

Hm, but it can be perfectly RP'ed......

But it's such a potential idea.....

But...... *forgets the train of thought and suddenly starts laughing again at the mental image of words on the screen: "You are stoned."*

Yay! I just thought of a wonderful idea to implement for the powergamers:
You should be able to gain slashing skills by fencing with wooden swords...

That way you wouldn't need health potions when powergaming :)
No but now when I think about it, do we have a fencing skill in the game??

Isn't like fencing when you use rapiers?

Oh well back to topic, I higly support the idea...

I like the mask idea though I think there should be a skill tied to it like disguise. Maybe have it so when you put a mask on you can set a name for the mask but it has a symbol by it like it does when someone uses the !name command. After all you KNOW they are wearing a mask but you could associate that mask with someone.

Hey, then if someone were to steal your mask, they could walk around impersonating YOU. Wo! imaging the chaos that would be caused.

Of course to be fair, there should be a chance to see past the mask, either a skill, or tied completely to perception.
